Histology Technologist in the Department of Anatomic Pathology and Digital Analytics at Duke University Hospital. Monday - Friday, 10:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m. 

This position is eligible for the third-shift differential and a $5,000 commitment bonus. 

General Description

Perform routine histopathological tests in a clinical laboratory for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and special paraffin sections of surgical and autopsy tissue for microscopic examination in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Examine and describe routine surgical specimens for histologic preparation.
  • Prepare equipment and reagents for processing, embedding, microtome cutting and mounting of tissue; perform routine and special staining techniques.
  • Label, file, discard and maintain records of tissue samples and containers, tissue processing cassettes, final paraffin blocks and slides.
  • Label and record slides of specimens received; provide specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologist.
  • Obtain and log specimens from the operating rooms and other areas as required.
  • Perform frozen cryostat sectioning.
  • Set up equipment, instruments, reagents and apparatus for specific laboratory techniques.
  • Perform various Quality Control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Utilize various hospital information systems and software.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology. Must meet the CLIA/CAP Education Requirements established to perform high-complexity testing.

Minimum educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) director as long as minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed

Experience

  • One year lab experience with BS/BA in Science.
  • No experience needed for NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences) Program.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Certification Eligible (must obtain HTL certification in 18 months (about 1 and a half years)).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated competency in histological laboratory skills.
  • Ability to perform assigned tasks on routine and special material.
