Job Summary

The Facilities Manager is responsible for overseeing the upkeep, safety, and functionality of the company's buildings, grounds, and equipment at the assigned location(s).

This role works closely with Operations and Safety leadership to plan and oversee preventive maintenance, manage contractors and vendors, and support process improvement initiatives and operational consistency across facilities.

The Facilities Manager ensures the site meets all applicable safety and regulatory requirements, manages the facilities budget, and leads the training, development, and performance of facilities and maintenance personnel.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee the daily maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all facility structures, grounds, and equipment across the assigned location(s), including buildings, greenhouses, shade structures, irrigation systems, and yard infrastructure.
  • Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules for facility systems, equipment, and vehicles to minimize downtime and extend asset life.
  • Coordinate and oversee outside contractors and vendors for repairs, construction, landscaping, and specialized maintenance work, including obtaining bids and reviewing invoices for accuracy.
  • Manage the facilities maintenance budget, tracking expenses against plan and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and other applicable safety and environmental regulations related to facility operations, and partner with the Safety team on inspections and corrective actions.
  • Supervise facilities and maintenance staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Manage facility-related capital improvement projects from planning through completion, including coordinating permits, timelines, and budgets.
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment, and manage relationships with suppliers.
  • Respond to facility emergencies (e.g., water leaks, electrical outages, HVAC failures) and coordinate timely resolution.
  • Conduct regular site walkthroughs to identify and address maintenance needs, safety hazards, and code compliance issues.
  • Ensure the training and development of a competent lead or supervisor capable of overseeing facilities operations during the Facilities Manager's absence.
  • Work with the site Human Resource Representative to address employee concerns, complaints, and workplace conflicts.
  • Maintain effective communication with facilities staff, supervisors, and office personnel, and represent the facilities team professionally in interactions with vendors and contractors.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support coordination between facilities operations and departments including Operations, Safety, and Purchasing.
  • Assist with space planning and layout changes to support operational needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activity, warranties, and equipment service history.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Safety leadership on process improvements and operational best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support nursery operations.

Experience & Other Requirements

Required

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities, maintenance, or building operations, including supervisory experience.
  • Working knowledge of building systems, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and irrigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage vendors and contractors and to read and evaluate bids and invoices.
  • Strong leadership, staffing, and team development skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize competing demands.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in facilities management, construction management, or a related field.
  • Experience in an agricultural, nursery, or wholesale distribution environment.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish communication skills or the ability to effectively communicate with facilities staff.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is performed both in an office setting and outdoors in active nursery yard and production environments.

Work conditions include varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, active equipment and vehicle traffic, and exposure to dust, plant material, and typical nursery conditions. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as applicable.

Physical requirements include:

  • Extensive standing and walking throughout the facility and yard during the workday.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, turning, and reaching.
  • Working on uneven ground surfaces including dirt, gravel, plant material, and irrigated areas.
  • Working in proximity to moving equipment and vehicles including forklifts, loaders, and delivery trucks.
  • Occasional climbing (ladders, ramps) to access equipment and structures.
  • Lifting up to 30 lbs independently when required.
  • Participating in team lifts up to 100 lbs when necessary.
