The Role
Devil Mountain is looking for an experienced Purchasing Manager to lead plant purchasing activities at our Eagle Creek, Oregon location.Â
In this role, you’ll help ensure our nursery teams have the plant material and supplies needed to support customers and day-to-day operations. You’ll build strong relationships with growers and suppliers, monitor inventory needs, and work closely with Sales, Receiving, and Yard teams to solve supply and product availability challenges. You’ll also help ensure purchasing information is accurate and effectively maintained within our ERP system.
This is a hands-on role for someone with strong nursery or horticultural experience who understands plant material, enjoys working with vendors, and can balance inventory needs, customer priorities, and operational demands.
What You’ll Do
- Lead plant purchasing activities to maintain appropriate inventory levels and support nursery operations and customer needs.Â
- Build and maintain strong relationships with growers, vendors, and suppliers, including resolving product availability, pricing, delivery, and supply issues.Â
- Monitor inventory needs and purchasing activity to help prevent stockouts, overstock, and obsolete inventory.Â
- Research and source plant material for inventory, customer projects, and special orders, recommending substitutions when appropriate.Â
- Partner closely with Sales, Receiving, and Yard teams to coordinate purchasing needs, incoming material, and product availability.Â
- Manage purchase orders and maintain accurate purchasing and vendor information within company systems.Â
- Hire, train, supervise, and support Stocking Specialist/Buyer staff.Â
- Support purchasing initiatives, process improvements, and special projects as needed.
What You Bring
Required
- At least 5 years of experience working in the nursery, horticulture, or a closely related industry.Â
- Purchasing, procurement, or plant-buying experience within the nursery or horticulture industry.
- Strong knowledge of plant material and nursery operations.
- Experience using ERP accounting or purchasing software.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple purchasing priorities.
- Ability to build effective relationships with vendors, Sales, Receiving, Yard teams, and other internal partners.
Work Environment
This is an in-office position with frequent interaction between office and nursery yard environments. Regular remote work is not available; short-term exceptions may be approved by upper management when appropriate.
The role requires extensive computer use, typing, and 10-key data entry and includes frequent movement between office and nursery yard areas. Yard conditions may include outdoor weather, uneven ground surfaces, dust, moisture, and plant material.
The position requires the ability to remain sitting or standing for extended periods, frequent use of hands and fingers, and lifting up to 20 lbs. approximately 20% of the time.
