POSITION SUMMARY

 

Works in the direct interment/entombment of the deceased, or disinterment/disentombment of remains.  Trims memorials and monuments on cemetery grounds. Maintains cemetery grounds and buildings under the direction and supervision of the Supervisor/Assistant Supervisor. Full-time position requires 40 hours per week. Overtime is required as needed.

 

In addition to general grounds worker duties, the Specialty Grounds I – Special Skills has knowledge, experience and currently performs at least TWO desired skills in the areas of, sprinkler systems, plumbing, welding, carpentry and painting. Requires direct supervision of the majority or required trade skill sets.

 

DESIRED SKILLS

  • Sprinkler systems
  • Install, maintain, inspect, and repair sprinkler systems for irrigation purposes (lawn sprinklers). Requiring knowledge of irrigation plans and the ability to test systems for proper functionality and leaks.
  • Plumbing
  • Install, repair, and maintain pipes, valves, fittings, drainage systems, and fixtures (such as sinks, toilets, and water heaters).
  • Identify and diagnose plumbing problems using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose plumbing challenges accordingly.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with the intricacies of working with PVC, CPVC, PEX, cast iron, and copper.
  • Welding
  • Read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures
  • Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal or overhead)
  • Repair machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps
  • Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (TIG, MMA etc.)
  • Professional Certification (e.g. an AWS welding certificate) will be required

 

  • Carpentry
  • Shapes or cuts materials to specified measurements, woodworking machines, hand tools or power tools.
  • Builds or repairs cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, or other wooden fixtures used in buildings.
  • Assembles and fastens materials to make frameworks or props.
  • Painting
  • Applies various finishes to buildings, rooms, or other structures, including primers or sealers.
  • Prepares, cleans, and tapes all jobsites.
  • Remove the old paint coating, if necessary.
  • Mixes colors or oils to obtain desired color or consistency.
  • Able to read and adhere to labels, safety warnings, and guidelines
  • Knowledge and proficiency with painting tools and equipment
  • Using fillers such as putty and plaster to repair cracks.
  • Understanding of paint requirements for different materials such as metal, aluminum, wood, and concrete.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work.

 

  • Sets up graves for interment services, seals vaults, backfills and tamps graves, replaces sod; trims all memorials and monuments on cemetery grounds.
  • Sets up tents as necessary; handles and stores dirt sheets and greens.
  • Mow, edges, sweeps lawns.
  • Removes flowers; cares for vases.
  • Prunes, fertilizes and waters the grounds.
  • Cares for flowerbeds and areas around buildings.
  • Raises graves and memorials, levels lawn.
  • Cleans office and performs janitorial maintenance.
  • Gathers and removes trash.
  • Acts as funeral attendant; assists priests, patrons and funeral directors as necessary.
  • Performs other cemetery tasks as directed by Supervisor.
  • Maintains a good personal appearance; conducts self in a manner befitting funerals and respect for the dead.
  • Responsible for safe and careful handling of all cemetery property and equipment; makes certain of its proper use and security.
  • Makes certain all equipment is clean and stored properly; informs the Supervisor of any needed maintenance or repairs to equipment, or buildings.
  • Ground workers in small cemeteries operated backhoe and performs minor maintenance work.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and Experience

 

Any combination of education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically:

 

  • General education sufficient to understand and observe written and oral instructions, directions and safety rules.
  • Previous experience in grounds-care helpful.
  • Training in lawn maintenance and landscaping equipment, excavation safety—all on the job training.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Knowledge of:

  • Application of on-the-job training in procedures and safety practices
  • Basic edging and trimming equipment operation and repair.

 

Skill in:

  • Acquiring necessary skills from on-the-job training.
  • Mastering all aspects of at least two primary trade skill set used at the location of employment.

 

Ability to:

  • Complete job on one’s own after initial instruction from Supervisor.
  • Write, read and follow instructions.
  • Handle grave set-ups, tins and sod carefully.
  • Operate standard equipment for grounds (lawn mowers, trimmers, etc.)

 

Physical and Environmental Requirements

 

  • Sit for sustained periods of time on a daily basis.
  • Lift, push and pull heavy objects and equipment
  • Lift objects weighing a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted and be able to lift heavier objects with the aid of other ground workers.
  • Perform tasks requiring intermittent bending, stooping, and walking
  • Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands, and arms.
