The CNC Machinist supports Holtec’s Manufacturing Operations by setting up and operating CNC machining equipment (Computer Numerical Control) to produce high‑precision components that meet strict engineering specifications and tolerance requirements. This role requires strong technical machining expertise, blueprint interpretation skills, and a commitment to quality and safety. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with production, engineering, and quality teams to ensure efficient, accurate, and reliable machining operations in a high‑spec manufacturing environment.

 

Location: East Pittsburgh, PA (Holtec Manufacturing Division)

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret CNC programs, blueprints, drawings, and work instructions
  • Set up and operate CNC mills and lathes using approved programs, fixtures, and tooling
  • Adjust machine settings to achieve required accuracy, tolerances, and surface finishes
  • Load raw materials, verify alignment, and perform machine warm‑up and safety checks
  • Conduct in‑process and first‑article inspections; make adjustments prior to full production
  • Use precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges) to verify specifications
  • Document inspection results and report defects or non‑conformances
  • Identify and resolve programming, machine, and tooling issues
  • Optimize programs and machine parameters to improve efficiency and productivity
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure machining accuracy
  • Manage tooling, monitor tool wear, and select specialized tooling as required
  • Review daily work assignments and production schedules
  • Maintain accurate production, scrap, and rework records
  • Ensure tools and equipment are calibrated, maintained, and properly stored
  • Report mechanical issues or potential failures promptly
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities and team meetings
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe work environment

 

Requirements:

  • Two‑year technical degree or completion of a relevant apprenticeship program required; equivalent experience and on‑the‑job training may be considered
  • 3–5 years of professional CNC machining experience
  • Experience operating and programming CNC machinery
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings
  • Proficiency using precision measurement and inspection equipment
  • Ability to calculate dimensions and tolerances using mathematical principles
  • Experience with Fanuc, Siemens 840D, and HAAS CNC controls preferred
  • Strong understanding of material types and machining characteristics
  • Ability to perform basic preventive maintenance on machines and tooling
  • Experience troubleshooting and performing minor repairs on CNC equipment, including HAAS, FPT machining centers, VBM (Vertical Boring Mill), and Toshiba machines preferred
  • Familiarity with quality standards and inspection requirements in a manufacturing environment
