Custodian - Part Time 

$20/Hour – No Benefits 

 

Job Description: Under the direction of the supervisors of the Division of Public Buildings, the Custodian – Part Time performs routine building custodial duties, general building maintenance, grounds maintenance, and related work as assigned.

 

Available Positions and Work Schedules: The City is currently seeking applicants for the following part-time schedules:


  • 15 hours per week: Monday through Friday, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • 25 hours per week: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • 10 hours per week: Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.


Available shifts will be provided to applicants at the time of interview. Applicants will be asked to identify their preferred shifts in order of priority from those available.

Final shift assignments will be made based on candidate ranking, preferred shift priority, anticipated start date, and the operational needs of the Public Buildings Division. 


Generally, higher-ranked candidates will receive priority in shift selection; however, when multiple positions are available, a candidate who is able to begin employment sooner may receive priority for an available shift over a higher-ranked candidate with a later start date.


General Responsibilities: A Custodian performs the following, but is not limited to: 


  • Sweeping, dusting, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, and waxing the floors and walls of halls, offices, and rooms.  
  • Maintaining general oversight and security of assigned buildings and offices, including opening and closing facilities, locking doors and windows, setting alarms, and reporting unusual or suspicious conditions.
  • Identifying and promptly reporting maintenance needs, unsafe conditions, property damage, vandalism, or other building-related concerns to a supervisor.
  • Properly using and storing cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Operating heavy industrial buffers or scrubbers.  
  • Cleaning plumbing fixtures and washrooms.  
  • Stocking washrooms with soap and other necessary supplies.  
  • Moving furniture and other equipment.  
  • Cleaning sidewalks, performing lawn and gardening maintenance.  
  • Clearing sidewalks of snow and ice  
  • Performing routine custodial and minor building maintenance duties, including cleaning, minor repairs, painting, window washing, changing light bulbs, and related tasks as assigned.
  • Setting up and breaking down rooms for meetings, programs, and special events, including tables, chairs, and related equipment.  
  • Other duties as required.  

 

Desirable Abilities, Knowledges, And Skills: 

 

  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to use cleaning tools and operate cleaning equipment. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with members of the public and other employees. 
  • Ability to perform assigned duties independently with limited supervision and effectively manage assigned work within established timeframes.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety instructions, product labels, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Knowledge of modern building cleaning methods. 
  • Flexibility in availability to meet division staffing needs. 

 

Physical Requirements: 

 

  • Ability to lift objects weighing (50) fifty pounds. 
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, and climb ladders and stairs as required to perform custodial duties.
  • Ability to move heavy equipment or furniture. 
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
  • Sufficient strength and physical ability to safely use hand tools and equipment required for routine custodial and minor maintenance duties. 
  • Successful candidates may be subject to a pre-employment physical exam. 

 

Candidate will be required to pass a BCI (Criminal Investigation) as well as a physical, back and drug screen.
