Advertised Compensation:  $70,000 to $73,000

Purpose: The Assistant Buyer provides operational support to the Buyer, primarily within Duty Free Food & Confection and additional responsibilities across Duty Paid and Food & Beverage lines of business. This role drives product selection, vendor coordination, and day-to-day category execution to support sales and margin performance.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Supports category management by interacting with vendors to gather information for item setup, problem resolution and purchasing of product
  • Analyzes product performance and identifies growth opportunities and liabilities
  • Oversees purchase orders including order writing, changes, cancellations, ensuring key shipments are delivered and processed
  • Supports product selection, pricing, and store merchandising decisions in partnership with Senior Buyer
  • Works as intermediary between buyers and vendors to resolve issues including out of stocks, cost adjustments, and new product selection
  • Reviews and analyzes daily/weekly reports, highlighting noteworthy achievements or possible concerns to the relevant buyer
  • Supports plan-o-gram development and product availability for new store openings
  • Supports vendor onboarding and administration processes
  • Collaborates with the Compliance team to ensure rollout of local marketing promotions

 

Reporting Relationship: The Assistant Buyer reports to the Senior Buyer

 

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment:

  • Education and Experience: The combination of education and professional experience must exceed 5 years:
    • In a technical role: Requires 5 years of retail operations or merchandising experience  
      • A bachelor’s degree in a business, marketing, or management program related to the functional area can count for 2 of the 5-year requirement
    • In the industry: 3+ years of retail experience
  • Specialized Training:
    • Training that leads to competency using financial tools; knowledge of concept profitability and how to use market trend information
  • Specialized Skillset/Competencies/Traits:
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
    • Experience with SAP preferred
    • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work enthusiastically and independently with constantly changing priorities
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; excellent written communication and interpersonal communication skills
    • Business acumen and also has the mindset required to understand the long-term implications of buying decisions and to advance the organization’s goals
    • Demonstrated history of understanding the needs of the business, stakeholders, the employee population, and individual circumstances
    • Demonstrated history of maintaining positive work environments
  • Location: This position is based at the North America Support Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey
