JOB SUMMARY:
The cashier position plays an important role in supporting Goodwill’s mission to provide employment services to those in need by delivering excellent customer service, supporting accurate transactions, and helping maintain a neat, organized store floor, creating a positive shopping experience that supports sales and funds community programs.
This role supports retail store operations by delivering excellent customer service while ensuring accurate, efficient point-of-sale transactions. Operates the cash register to process customer purchases, collect payment, make change, bag merchandise, and assist with questions and shopping needs. Maintains a clean and safe checkout/work area, supports merchandise flow and sales-floor organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet and thank all customers in a friendly, professional manner; respond to customer questions; and provide excellent, mission-focused customer service to ensure a positive and respectful shopping experience.
- Efficiently and accurately operate the cash register and POS system to process customer transactions, collect payment, make change, bag merchandise, respond to questions, assist with shopping needs, and thank the customer.
- Pull racks for transporting clothing from the back room to the sales floor and place clothing on sales floor racks.
Place garments in the correct category and size section according to merchandising standards. - Pull clothing from racks that are too full and/or according to the weekly color rotation schedule to ensure the rotation system is effective and merchandise presentation standards are maintained.
- Maintain a neat, orderly, and customer-ready sales floor by straightening merchandise, keeping aisles and work areas clear, and returning items to appropriate locations as needed.
- Provide a safe shopping environment by keeping the sales floor, work area, and dressing rooms clean, free of clothing, debris, and hangers.
- Maintain and clean work area, along with following SOP guidelines for work area.
- Report known or suspected security and/or theft problems to the Team Lead or another member of management.
Teamwork, Direction, and Mission Support
- Participate as a team player and attend team meetings as required to improve customer/donor service, inventory flow, and operation processes.
- Become familiar with Goodwill’s mission and programs in order to answer questions and provide information appropriately.
- Follow all safety and security procedures and maintain a safe, orderly work environment.
- May be assigned to assist in other work areas or perform additional duties as needed to support store operations.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Job can be learned through on-the-job training and one-on-one supervision.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to operate POS system, register, and telephone.
- Ability to count back change and balance a cash drawer.
- Ability to provide excellent customer and donor service, including professional interactions and assistance as needed.
- Knowledge of current trends and styles to aide in displaying inventory.
- Ability to work a varied schedule and flexible hours Sunday through Saturday of each week.
- Ability to professionally communicate and project a positive image of Goodwill to customers and donors.
- Ability to give and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to read, write, and complete paperwork.
- Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work.
- Ability to work independently and make responsible decisions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to stand and walk for eight (8) hours or more if necessary.
- Ability to frequently use hands and fingers for scanning items, handling cash, bagging, and operating a register/POS system.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and twist to retrieve merchandise, bag items, stock, and maintain the checkout area.
- Ability to push/pull rolling racks and carts safely to support merchandise flow and floor recovery.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently (e.g., bags/merchandise) and up to 35 pounds occasionally, with or without assistance, following safe lifting practices.
- Ability to grasp and handle hangers and clothing.
- Ability to visually focus at close range to read labels, prices, screens, and receipts; and at a distance for floor awareness.
- Able to communicate clearly with customers and coworkers in a retail environment (verbal communication/hearing).
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment, maintaining pace while remaining accurate and attentive to safety.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed indoors in a typical retail environment with normal lighting, temperature-controlled conditions, and moderate noise levels.
- Some dust, dirt and lint from incoming donated goods.
