The Optometry Technician assists in providing vision screenings and basic eye health assessments to children at schools and community sites. This role involves traveling to scheduled locations, setting up mobile testing equipment, performing vision tests, and assisting the optometrist or screening team in collecting and recording accurate results. The technician plays an essential role in early detection of vision issues and ensuring children receive appropriate follow-up care. Job Functions/Responsibilities: Vision Screening & Testing Conduct basic vision screenings for students, including visual acuity, color vision, stereopsis (depth perception), and other age-appropriate tests. Assist with autorefraction, tonometry, and other diagnostic tests as directed. Record screening results accurately and ensure data confidentiality. Communicate clearly and patiently with children of all ages. Equipment Setup & Maintenance Safely transport, set up, and break down mobile optometry equipment at each school site. Maintain equipment calibration and cleanliness according to safety and hygiene standards. Manage inventory of supplies and ensure readiness for each screening event. Administrative Support Maintain accurate logs of screened students and ensure documentation aligns with program protocols. Assist with consent forms, referrals, and follow-up communication with parents or guardians. Coordinate schedules and routes with the program manager to optimize travel efficiency. Community & Team Engagement Represent the program professionally when interacting with school staff, students, and families. Support the optometrist or screening coordinator in data collection and program evaluation. Participate in outreach activities to promote eye health awareness. Other duties as assigned. QualificationsEducational Requirements/Qualifications: Education High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or Optometric Technician/Assistant certification preferred. Experience Experience working with children or in a school/community health setting preferred. Previous optometry, ophthalmology, or healthcare experience a plus. Skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and school staff. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Comfortable working independently in a mobile or field-based setting. Basic knowledge of vision testing procedures and equipment. Competent with electronic data entry and recordkeeping systems. Licenses/Certifications Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required. Schedule Requirements: Full-time position, 5 days per week, 100% clinic-based, in person work required. Work schedules are set at the discretion of CFMC and may be adjusted at any time based on the operational needs of the organization.
