Emergency Medical Technician – Full Time, Non-Exempt
OBJECTIVES
Under the general direction of the EMS Director, the EMT provides high-quality emergency medical care at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level, emergent transportation of the sick and injured, provides for non-emergent service requests for medical and public assistance, and cooperative support of multiple local and regional agencies. This role focuses on clinical excellence, operational efficiency, community stewardship and mentorship of student members within the Rescue Post 512 program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Clinical Excellence: Responds to emergency and routine service requests in Ellington and surrounding communities, providing high-quality care consistent with Connecticut Statewide EMS Protocols, North Central CT Regional EMS guidelines and local medical control authority.
• Operational Effectiveness and Autonomy: Provides for high-quality patient care inclusive of clinical excellence, sound decision making, patient advocacy and real time system status management. Operates autonomously, independent of direct supervision or direct clinical oversight. Requests additional resources, providers and online medical control as required to effectively mitigate incidents and service requests.
• Driving / Operating Vehicles: Obtains and maintains Emergency Vehicle Operations training (certification dictated by Ellington EMS). Drives and operates ambulances, service vehicles, and other vehicles safely and with due regard, in all scenarios of operation including emergency response, routine travel, staging and during incident operations.
• Advanced Documentation: Utilizes the ESO Electronic Health Record (EHR) platform to complete thorough, accurate, and timely patient care reports (PCRs). Creates agency reports, referrals and evaluations as required.
• Data & Quality Assurance: Participates in the departmental Quality Improvement (QI) process, including peer chart reviews, to ensure agency compliance with clinical best practices, protocols and regulatory standards.
• Leadership & Mentorship: Provides for leadership, mentorship and supervision when operating with volunteers and Rescue Post 512 members (ages 14–18), providing oversight, developing and evaluating clinical and operational skills, and fostering an environment of professionalism, advocacy and support.
• Operational Proficiency and Readiness: Performs daily inspections of ambulances, equipment, service vehicles and stations using checklists and / or digital devices. Ensures proper supply, function and readiness of equipment, consumables, medications and devices. Restocks, tests and services components as required.
• Inter-Agency Collaboration: Works seamlessly with myriad local agencies (emergency service providers, general municipal government and educational entities), mutual aid partners and multiple Advanced Life Support agencies including intercept and HEMS providers.
• Specialized Response: Maintains readiness for high-acuity incidents, including ASHER (Active Shooter/Hostile Event Response), hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue incidents, fire standbys, fire rehab, searches and community / public relations events.
• Routine Maintenance: Provides routine housekeeping and maintenance of stations, vehicles and equipment, including cleaning, restocking, and maintaining (buildings, grounds, equipment) within the confines of position. Completes problem reports and / or refers maintenance / service requests to the proper authority as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Solid, fundamental knowledge of emergency medical conditions, treatments, techniques, interventions, therapies and procedures.
• Solid, fundamental knowledge of emergency service operations including EMS, staging, scene safety, incident command, triage, communications (dispatch, scene and hospital) and documentation.
• Familiarity and proficiency with Connecticut Statewide EMS protocols.
• Good social skills, general intelligence and powers of observation and assessment.
• Ability to operate bio-medical and telecommunications equipment.
• Ability to perform calmly and efficiently in crisis situations.
• Ability to operate autonomously, without direct supervision, making critical decisions with significant consequences.
• Ability to perform all job functions in potentially uncomfortable, unpleasant and austere conditions and situations.
• Ability to maintain records and prepare reports using a computer or digital device.
• Ability to understand written policies, protocols, statutes and laws and apply them to specific situations.
• Physical strength adequate to lift, move and evacuate unconscious, injured, infirm, and incapacitated patients of all ages and body types.
• Ability to operate specially equipped vehicles under emergency conditions.
• Ability to abide by all legal and mandatory standards and doctrines, including but not limited to OSHA, HIPAA, medical control authority, Town of Ellington policy, SOP’s, GOG’s and directives.
• Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays and assigned shifts, up to 24 hours consecutively.
• Willingness to work overtime, both voluntary and mandatory as required to maintain required EMS staffing.
• Willingness to work with unpaid volunteers who will be performing the same functions as paid personnel.
• Willingness to guide, mentor, advise and train youth members of ERP 512 in all aspects of clinical, operational and educational EMS operations.
• Willingness to assist in training activities for both paid and volunteer personnel, including drills, exercises, orientation and precepting.
• Willingness not to smoke, vape or use any tobacco products while on duty.
• Willingness to maintain vehicles, equipment and duty stations in good condition.
• Willingness to maintain physical conditioning commensurate with the demands of the position.
• Willingness to maintain a working environment of empathy, mentorship and proficiency while fostering a culture of progress, safety and stewardship.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
To excel in this role, candidates must possess the physical stamina and resilience necessary to provide high-quality care in unpredictable environments. The following physical demands are essential for the performance of daily duties:
Physical Endurance & Mobility
• Extended Shifts: Capability to maintain focus and physical activity during continuous shifts lasting 12 to 24 hours.
• Dynamic Movement: Ability to transition quickly between sedentary tasks (desk work and vehicle operation) and high-intensity physical labor.
• Manual Handling: Must be able to lift, carry, and balance heavy equipment and patients. This includes the ability to lift a minimum of 125 lbs. (250 lbs. with a partner) and navigate stretchers or stair chairs through tight spaces.
Environmental Adaptability
• Austere Conditions: Perform critical interventions in non-traditional settings, including high-traffic roadsides, unfamiliar and non-traditional environments, or cramped residential quarters.
• Inclement Weather: Work effectively while exposed to extreme temperatures (heat/cold), rain, snow, ice and wind for prolonged periods.
• Rough Terrain: Maintain footing and equipment stability while operating on uneven surfaces, steep inclines, or slippery ground.
Technical & Sensory Demands
• Vehicle Operation: Proficiency in operating an ambulance safely under both routine and emergency (lights and sirens) conditions.
• Fine Motor Skills: Ability to perform delicate medical procedures (e.g., BGL checks, bandaging, airway management, etc.) while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
• High-Stress Interaction: Maintain professional composure and clear communication during frequent contact with the public, often in emotionally charged or potentially volatile situations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum)
• High School Diploma.
• Valid Connecticut Driver’s License with clean driving record.
• State of Connecticut EMT-B with minimum 2 years’ EMS experience.
• AHA - Healthcare Provider CPR Certification.
• Haz-Mat Awareness or greater (within 1 year of appointment).
• NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 (within 1 year of appointment).
• Appointment is subject to a background check.
