Position Overview

The Marine Supervisor will report to the Director of Marine Operations and provide operational support to GrayMar's marine response program. The Marine Supervisor will work in the field and on the water to supervise crews, coordinate vessels and marine equipment, and ensure the safe execution of spill response, containment, recovery, standby, salvage support, over-water transfer support, and other marine operations.

Key Responsibilities

路 Accomplishes daily marine work goals by leading by example, coaching, training, and supervising assigned marine personnel.

路 Plans and coordinates daily marine operations, including crew assignments, vessel deployment, equipment needs, mobilization, and demobilization.

路 Conducts job-specific and on-the-job training for marine personnel, including safe vessel operations, line handling, docking, personal flotation device use, and emergency procedures.

路 Implements and enforces company systems, policies, Job Hazard Analyses, and site-specific procedures for marine projects, spills, standby assignments, and emergency responses.

路 Creates worksheets and daily documentation for billing that accurately reflect labor, vessels, equipment, materials, rentals, disposal, and other billable items.

路 Maintains a safe and healthy marine work environment by enforcing company standards, stop-work authority, required PPE, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

路 Evaluates weather, tides, currents, water temperature, vessel traffic, navigation hazards, and changing site conditions before and during marine operations.

路 Ensures vessels, trailers, pumps, skimmers, boom, radios, PFDs, and other marine response equipment are inspected, maintained, documented, and ready for deployment.

路 Supervises over-water containment and recovery activities, including boom deployment, skimming, pumping, towing support, shoreline access, and other marine response tasks.

路 Coordinates professionally with customers, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, vessel operators, and other response partners to support safe and efficient operations.

路 Performs and supervises labor-intensive marine response activities in all-weather conditions, including work from vessels, docks, shorelines, and other waterfront environments.

路 Works safely around moving vessels, uneven or slippery surfaces, low clearances, confined spaces, heights, and other hazards associated with marine and emergency response operations.

路 Operates or supervises the safe use of marine and support equipment, including workboats, landing craft, airboats, pumps, skimmers, forklifts, pressure washers, and related equipment as qualified.

路 Performs other related duties as assigned in support of GrayMar marine operations and emergency response activities.

路 Strong work ethic with a safety-first mindset and the ability to lead crews in dynamic marine and emergency response environments.

路 Ability to work independently and as part of a team while managing multiple crews, vessels, tasks, changing priorities, and deadlines.

路 Thorough understanding of marine operations, including vessel handling, docking, line handling, towing support, navigation awareness, and over-water work practices.

路 Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to provide clear direction during routine and emergency marine operations.

路 Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate vessel, equipment, safety, and project documentation.

路 Strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities involving marine equipment, outboard engines, pumps, skimmers, trailers, and related response equipment.

路 Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, navigation information, weather forecasts, and tide/current information.

路 Knowledge of preventive maintenance and inspection requirements for workboats, outboard engines, trailers, pumps, and other marine response equipment.

路 Must be able to perform physical labor, including lifting, pulling, pushing, handling lines and hoses, deploying boom, and moving equipment on vessels and docks.

路 Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times and maintain balance while working on vessels, docks, and uneven or slippery surfaces.

路 Must be able to wear required PPE, including a personal flotation device and respirator when required by the task or site conditions.

路 Must be able to work in adverse conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, night operations, extended shifts, and emergency call-outs.

Education and Experience Required

路 High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.

路 Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.

路 Five years of experience in marine operations, oil spill response, HAZWOPER/environmental response, or a related field; or three years of relevant experience with an additional two years of supervisory experience in another industry.

路 USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (OUPV/Master), TWIC, and current HAZWOPER training are preferred and may be required based on assigned duties. Proficiency with Fleetio or related software for equipment reports and logs is also preferred.
