DEFINITION: Under the direction of a Registered Professional Nurse, nursing supervisor, physician, or other authorized supervisory personnel, provides nursing care and treatment to inmates/residents of a correctional health care facility. Performs practical and professional nursing duties within the scope of the applicable Civil Service title and licensure, carries out authorized medical and therapeutic orders, maintains accurate medical records, and performs related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
- Assists physicians and Registered Professional Nurses with examinations, assessments, treatments, and other nursing procedures.
- Provides routine and bedside nursing care to inmates/residents and administers first aid and emergency care as needed.
- Obtains and records vital signs and other pertinent medical information.
- Administers medications and prescribed treatments within the scope of practice; observes for adverse reactions and reports concerns or changes in condition to appropriate medical personnel.
- Collects, labels, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis and assists with laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
- Performs nursing procedures within the scope of practice, including dressings, bandages, catheter care, tube feedings, colostomy care, and prescribed isolation and infection-control procedures.
- Maintains accurate medical records and documentation of medications, treatments, vital signs, observations, and other patient information.
- Accounts for narcotics, controlled substances, and other accountable medications.
- Maintains and inventories medications, medical supplies, equipment, and related materials.
- Communicates inmate/resident medical information, symptoms, behavioral changes, and other pertinent information to nursing and medical staff.
- Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer procedures.
- Provides health-related information and instruction regarding medications, personal care, hygiene, and other appropriate health matters.
- Participates as a member of the health care team in developing and carrying out treatment goals.
- Provides instruction to correctional and other nonprofessional staff regarding medically related duties and procedures, as assigned.
- Maintains confidentiality of medical information and records.
- Learns and utilizes electronic and/or manual medical recordkeeping systems.
LICENSE:
- Applicants must possess a valid registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)/Graduate Nurse (RN) in New Jersey. Persons who possess the registration by waiver must have satisfactorily completed an approved refresher program.
- Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of practical and professional nursing principles, practices, techniques, and procedures within the applicable scope of practice.
- Knowledge of first aid, medications and their potential side effects, medical and laboratory procedures, diagnostic procedures, infection control, and human anatomy.
- Ability to recognize and report changes in an inmate's/resident's physical or emotional condition.
- Ability to accurately administer medications and treatments and maintain complete medical records and reports.
- Ability to interpret and apply applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to organize assigned nursing work and establish effective work methods.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians, Registered Professional Nurses, correctional staff, inmates/residents, and others.
- Ability to effectively communicate medical information to nursing, medical, correctional, and other facility personnel.
- Ability to provide nursing care, first aid, and other duties within the scope of practice.
- Ability to lift, move, and position inmates/residents as needed.
- Ability to work effectively in a correctional health care environment.
- Ability to learn and utilize electronic and/or manual recordkeeping systems.
SHIFT AVAILABILITY:
- B Shift, 7:00AM-7:00PM
- Monday – Friday, 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM (Designated 10-hour workday will be determined)
RATE: $27.06 per hour (higher starting salary commensurate upon experience), 42 hours per week.
