Position Summary
The Industrial Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized manufacturing environment throughout the facility. This position performs general custodial duties in office, breakroom, restroom, and production areas while ensuring all work areas meet company cleanliness and safety standards. Unlike traditional commercial cleaning, this position routinely cleans industrial manufacturing environments where oil, grease, metal shavings, dust, and other production-related debris are present. This position requires a highly motivated individual who can work independently with little to no direct supervision while consistently maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety, and productivity.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, breakrooms, offices, conference rooms, hallways, and common areas.
- Clean and maintain production floors, aisles, workstations, and surrounding manufacturing areas.
- Sweep, mop, scrub, and maintain floors using appropriate cleaning equipment and chemicals.
- Remove oil, grease, coolant residue, metal shavings, and other manufacturing debris from production areas.
- Empty trash and recycling containers throughout the facility and dispose of waste according to company procedures.
- Clean windows, doors, walls, lockers, drinking fountains, and other facility surfaces.
- Restock restroom and breakroom supplies.
- Operate industrial cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, and pressure washers.
- Clean machinery exteriors and surrounding work areas without interfering with production equipment.
- Maintain cleaning equipment and notify management of repair needs.
- Follow all safety procedures when handling cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials.
- Assist with spill cleanup and emergency housekeeping needs.
- Maintain inventory of custodial supplies.
- Support company housekeeping initiatives, including 5S or continuous improvement programs.
- Follow all OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Plan, prioritize, and complete assigned cleaning tasks independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Skills & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous industrial, manufacturing, warehouse, or custodial experience preferred.
- Experience using industrial cleaning equipment is a plus.
- Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with little to no supervision while managing daily responsibilities effectively.
- Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and the ability to identify cleaning needs without being directed.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Dependable with excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Physical Demands
- Frequent standing and walking throughout the workday.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching, twisting, and climbing.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds independently.
- Frequent repetitive use of hands and arms.
- Ability to operate powered cleaning equipment safely.
- Ability to work around moving machinery.
- Ability to work in environments with oil, grease, metal shavings, dust, noise, and varying temperatures.
Work Environment
Work is performed throughout an active manufacturing and production facility, including offices, breakrooms, restrooms, warehouse areas, and production departments. The position routinely works around industrial equipment, forklifts, machining operations, oil, grease, coolants, and metal shavings. Appropriate PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and safety footwear, may be required depending on the work area.
