Position Summary

This position is responsible for independently preparing meals and managing food production. The role supports the Sous or Executive Chef in maintaining high quality of food and safety standards. 

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook a variety of meals for residents with attention to quality and presentation. 
  • Alter or adapt recipes to accommodate special dining needs of residents or to improve recipes.
  • Ensure attractive presentation of food on the plate before serving.
  • Identify food and supplies needed for the next week’s menus and report to the supervisor.
  • Participate in new menu and special menu planning. 
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work area and kitchen/storage areas. 
  • Ensure proper handling, labeling and storage of food for infection control.
  • Prepare meats for storage and portion control upon delivery. Ensure proper storage of all delivered foods and ingredients.
  • Assist with dishwashing and kitchen sanitation, as needed. 
  • Notify manager of food supply needs and malfunctioning equipment or appliances.
  • Assist in the recording of Ready – to – Use – food items into the TELS website. Three items should be recorded for every meal.
  • Record cooler, freezer and dish machine temperatures in the TELS website. 
  • Report any on-the-job injuries to the supervisor before the end of the work shift on the day the injury occurs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of verbal and written information pertaining to residents, community operations and personnel. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Other Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • 2+ years of cooking experience in senior living, healthcare, or restaurant setting

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Strong knowledge of food safety and dietary guidelines
  • State food-handling and kitchen regulations
  • Promote teamwork in providing services to residents.
  • Operation of kitchen appliances (dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, coffee maker, ice machine, blender, food processor, meat slicer, mixer, etc.) 
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 40 lbs. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • ServeSafe or equivalent certification is preferred
  • Willingness to learn and help others
  • Enjoyment in working with older adults
