Job Summary
Sectional Care II is responsible for the care and maintenance of plants within assigned areas of the production yard. This role supports plant health and production by maintaining plant quality, monitoring irrigation conditions, and assisting with organization and consolidation of plant material.
Employees in this role work closely with Yard Management and Inventory staff to ensure plant health issues are identified and that plant material is properly maintained and organized.
Essential Functions
- Pull weeds, remove suckers, and consolidate plant material within assigned areas.
- Support the training and development of Level I employees within the department by demonstrating proper work techniques and assisting with task guidance as needed.
- Monitor irrigation conditions and ensure plants are receiving proper watering without over- or under-watering.
- Identify plant health issues and report concerns to Yard Management.
- Communicate with Inventory staff when moving or consolidating plant material and report plant loss or dumps.
- Communicate with the Yard Manager regarding daily and weekly work assignments.
- Safely use ladders between 8 and 14 feet tall.
- Climb ladders to install stakes and tie trees as required.
- Maintain nursery grounds by keeping work areas clean, organized, and safe for employees, customers, and vendors.
- Handle nursery stock carefully and ensure plants are watered and placed in appropriate locations.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist other nursery departments as needed.
- Support general nursery operations and plant care activities.
- Duties are subject to change at any time per management’s discretion.
Experience & Other Requirements
Required
- Ability to identify plant material and recognize plant health concerns.
- Ability to safely use ladders and perform tasks at elevated heights.
- Ability to follow irrigation practices and observe plant watering needs.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and inventory staff.
Preferred
- Previous experience working in a nursery, agriculture, or landscape environment.
- Experience with plant maintenance, plant health monitoring, or irrigation support.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position is performed primarily outdoors in active nursery production environments.
Work conditions include varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, and exposure to dust, plant material, moisture, and seasonal allergens. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as applicable.
Physical requirements include:
- Extensive walking throughout the nursery during the workday.
- Frequent bending, twisting, turning, squatting, and stooping.
- Climbing ladders between 8 and 14 feet tall.
- Working on uneven surfaces including dirt, gravel, plant material, and irrigated areas.
- Use of hands and fingers for grasping and handling plant material.
- Lifting up to 75 lbs independently (approximately 80% of the time).
- Participating in team lifts up to 100 lbs (approximately 10% of the time) when required.
