Position Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Provost Vice President for Student Success, the Coordinator of Student Life is responsible for coordinating and administering an innovative and comprehensive student life program that supports the mission of Northern New Mexico College. Quality service is essential in this public relations position to establish positive first impressions and expectations of continued quality service. It is therefore imperative that the Coordinator of Student Life impart the College’s core values of service and school spirit.

Duties & Responsibilities

Student Life/Student Activities

  • Provides vision and leadership for innovative, engaging, regular student activities.  Plans programming for students in a wide range of activities on week days and weekends.  Plans programs to encourage social connections, student involvement, and to raise awareness of social and cultural issues.
  • Organize and provide overall direction to new student orientation programs.
  • Collaborate with campus and community partners to provide campus programs including, but not limited to, Welcome Week, Family Day, “Heritage Months” (i.e. BHM, WHM, etc), Healthy Relationships Week, and Graduation as well as create and implement a robust campus student leadership curriculum.
  • Serves as advisor to the Student Senate (ie Student Government). Duties include weekly one on one meeting with the Student Senate President, attending meetings of officers and senate, training officers, monitoring spending, fostering leadership, maintaining the standards of the College’s values, policies, and the Student Senate constitution.
  • Coordinates the Welcome Weekend Activities Fair to encourage student involvement on campus by introducing new students to club and organizational involvement opportunities.
  • Oversees student clubs and organizations, including coordination of club registration/recognition and activity reports, regular communication with club and organization advisors and officers, and offers advisor and officer training.
  • Provides training for all Club and Organization Treasurers.
  • Participates in the organization and evaluation of student leadership opportunities on campus, including collaborating with other advisors for recruiting, selecting, and providing on-going training and formation opportunities for student leaders.
  • Manages budget for areas of responsibility by planning and monitoring spending for activities/events programming.
  • Oversee the processing of Student Club and Organization account expenditures and student organization risk management practices.
  • Provides leadership in developing and implementing the Intramurals program.   Hires, trains, and supervises Intramural facilitators.  Works closely with Athletics to schedule space for Intramurals and Open Gym recreation.

General

  • Develop, implement, and assess a department strategic plan to support the institution’s mission, goals, and strategic plan.
  • Contributes to the development of students, faculty, and staff by presenting workshops and trainings, as necessary.
  • Contributes to and facilitates the life and positive culture of the College and represents the Student Affairs Division by serving on committees as assigned, including governance committees, task forces, and participating in other professional development activities.
  • Contributes to College long-term and strategic planning efforts, including accreditation, as needed.
  • Updates web sites for areas of responsibility.
  • Effectively communicates with students in person and using multiple modalities including technology, social media, etc.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • An associate’s degree.

Experience

  • Two years’ experience in student activities, orientation, and residence life or in events planning at the undergraduate or graduate level. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two or more years of related experience in student affairs at the professional level; prefer two years additional years of experience in Student Affairs as a graduate assistant and/or experience as a student leader in areas related to student activities, student government, with related experience, also considered. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of best practices in student activities, orientation, or student leadership; a genuine interest and enthusiasm for working directly with students; excellent managerial, advisory/supervisory, team-building, and communication skills; ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently; and desire to work in a high-traffic, fast-paced environment. Experience related to Title IX and/or student conduct.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with diverse groups
  • Ability to motivate and inspire
  • Ability to plan innovative activities and to creatively market and promote activities and positions
  • Able to be flexible and to balance many tasks simultaneously and work well both independently and cooperatively with others
  • Enjoys spending significant amounts of time with people, especially college-aged students and student leaders.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Requires some night and weekend hours throughout the academic year.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Repetitive hand motions and prolonged use of computer;
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment;
