Summary:

Peer Recovery Support Specialist will provide Recovery Coaching to patients struggling with mental health and substance use disorders. Recovery Coaching is a set of non-clinical activities based on shared lived experience that engage, educate, and support an individual to successfully recover from mental or substance use disorders. Peer Recovery Support Specialists act as a recovery and empowerment catalyst: guiding the recovery process and supporting individual recovery choices, goals, and decisions. They may assist the patient in identifying personal and environmental obstacles to recovery, link the recovering person to the recovery community, and serve as a personal guide and mentor in the management of personal and family recovery. A Peer Recovery Support Specialist does not serve the role of sponsor. A Peer Recovery Support Specialist models competency in resiliency and recovery and ongoing coping skills. Peer Recovery Support Specialists work closely with the patients treatment team and, when needed, works with patients family and community, as well

Responsibilities:

Presbyterian is seeking a PeerSupport Specialist, In this role, you will provide patient‑centered recovery support by coordinating with hospital staff, funders, and community partners to ensure seamless continuity of care. I conduct patient assessments, deliver Motivational Interviewing–based engagement, and provide Naloxone education in collaboration with medical and nursing teams. I manage patient logistics including transportation, follow‑up appointments, and discharge planning, while maintaining consistent post‑discharge contact to support long‑term recovery outcomes. I also create reports, presentations, and documentation, track patient progress and outcomes, and ensure compliance with hospital, state, federal, and funding regulations.

Drawing on lived experience in recovery, I build meaningful, trust‑based relationships that empower patients and model successful recovery pathways. I help patients access essential community resources, including healthcare, housing, employment support, and social services, ensuring a smooth transition back into the community. I collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to create a supportive recovery environment, assist with social and therapeutic activities, and strengthen patient engagement. Through mentorship, advocacy, and resource coordination, I help individuals navigate barriers, develop recovery skills, and build a sustainable foundation for long‑term wellness.

This position is eligible for the Northern New Mexico differential of $4.00 per hour. (This differential may be adjusted or discontinued based on business requirements.)

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED

  • Register for Peer Certification in accordance with standards set by the NM Behavioral Health Services Division’s Office of Peer Recovery and Engagement (OPRE) class within 6 months after hire

  • Current NM drivers license is preferred

  • Certified Narcan educator preferred

  • Trained in Motivational Interviewing Skills preferred

  • Previous experience working in hospital or ED setting preferred

  • Experience working with confidential medical records and documentation preferred

  • Knowledge of community resources required

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Computer skills, familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point

  • Familiar with readiness assessment tools and SBIRT

  • BLS required at time of hire
