Position Summary
The Overnight Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout the children’s museum. This role performs after-hours cleaning and sanitation to ensure exhibits, public areas, classrooms, and staff spaces are ready for visitors each morning. This is a physical, detail-oriented role that supports the museum’s mission by helping provide a healthy, well-maintained space for children, families, and staff.
Essential Functions & Major Responsibilities:
Cleaning & Sanitation
- Clean and sanitize exhibit areas, classrooms, restrooms, offices, and public spaces.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and deep clean floors throughout the museum.
- Empty trash and recycling and transport materials to proper disposal areas.
- Disinfect high-touch surfaces, including handrails, doorknobs, tables, exhibit pieces, and play equipment.
- Restock supplies such as soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and sanitation materials.
- Ensure cleaning equipment is properly stored and maintained.
- Follow all museum safety, security, and cleaning protocols.
- Clean windows, glass partitions, doors, and mirrors.
- Restock restroom and sanitation supplies.
Exhibit & Facility Care
- Clean identified interactive exhibits following museum sanitation standards.
- Report damaged exhibits, maintenance issues, or safety hazards.
- Support periodic deep cleaning projects and seasonal resets.
- Assist with occasional light maintenance tasks (e.g., replacing light bulbs, minor repairs).
Safety & Security
- Follow established cleaning protocols.
- Use cleaning chemicals safely and according to instructions.
- Ensure building is secured according to closing procedures.
- Report incidents, suspicious activity, or building concerns.
Team Support
- Coordinate with Facilities staff on priorities.
- Maintain cleaning equipment and notify supervisor of supply needs.
- Assist with occasional event cleanup or special projects.
Requirements
Position Requirements:
- Prior custodial or janitorial experience preferred (not required).
- Prior experience with janitorial equipment (buffers, scrubbers, etc.) preferred.
- Ability to work independently during overnight hours.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to follow written procedures and safety guidelines.
- Comfort working in a family-focused, child-centered environment.
- Ability to push cleaning carts and operate basic custodial equipment
- Comfortable performing repetitive cleaning tasks
Education and/or Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Prior custodial or janitorial experience preferred.
- Prior experience with janitorial equipment (buffers, scrubbers, etc.) preferred.Â

- Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time, climb ladders, and stairs.Â

- Independent body mobility to access a variety of spaces (high, small, awkward, etc.) with exhibit elements of varying height.Â
- Ability to bend, carry, reach to the side, front, and overhead, push pull, walk, stand, twist and squat, grab, squeeze are repetitive motions required of the position.Â
- Use hands to feel and manipulate tools and materials and reach with hands and arms.Â
- Some exposure to hazards or physical risks which require basic safety precautions and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE.)Â
- Both indoor and outdoor exhibit spaces – may be exposed to moderate weather conditions.Â
- Regularly exposed to moderate noise in and around exhibits. Occasionally exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable.Â

This is a part-time, overnight position, onsite in Everett. The pay is $22.55 an hour plus an additional $1.00 shift differential premium for working overnight hours. The schedule is 10pm-3:30am.
