The primary purpose and function of the Relief Veterinarian is to provide preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of Pets. Essential responsibilities include ensuring the safety of pets, clients, and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs. The veterinarian will obtain relevant information and history from clients, maintain proper and complete medical records, educate clients about preventative care, pet health needs, diagnosis or treatment, hospital services, and other related information. They will provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service including prescribing and administering preventative care for the wellness needs of pets and diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of pets. Effective communication of diagnosis and treatment plans to the veterinary medical team and clients is required. The role also involves ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws, including proper maintenance of the controlled substance inventory log, and understanding and following state guidelines regarding duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians. Other job duties as assigned. The position requires the ability to multi-task, strong communication skills, organizational ability, surgical skills, problem-solving skills, client service skills, intellectual ability, compassionate commitment to pet care, mathematical ability, computer skills, and management ability. Attitudes required include initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and tolerance for stress/resiliency. Special working conditions include confidence around pets, ability to work more than 40 hours per week including weekends and evenings, ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds, and exposure to various pets and occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances. Minimal travel may be required. Experience and education requirements include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree, license in good standing with the applicable state veterinary board, license with the Drug Enforcement Agency, and proven ability to perform all basic surgeries using standard medical instruments and equipment.
