The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) is a thriving professional medical society dedicated to optimizing patient care and improving lives through minimally invasive, image-guided treatments. Located in Fairfax, Virginia, SIR represents one of the most innovative, exciting, and competitive medical specialties today. 

SIR is a 501(c)(6) professional association that supports more than 8,100 interventional radiology physicians, trainees, medical students, scientists and clinical professionals. SIR is also comprised of SIR’s 501(c)(3) Foundation, which focuses on research and fundraising to advance the future of interventional radiology. Together SIR and SIR Foundation have nearly 50 staff, combined annual revenues of $12.6 million, and assets of nearly $17 million.


Position Summary

The Senior Director, Advocacy and Practice Development provides strategic leadership for SIR's policy, advocacy, revenue cycle, and practice development portfolio.

This position leads a high-performing team responsible for government relations, health policy, revenue cycle, and practice development initiatives. Working closely with physician leaders, volunteers, external stakeholders, and senior staff, the Senior Director helps shape strategies that advance the specialty of interventional radiology within the rapidly evolving U.S. healthcare system.

The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader with expertise in healthcare delivery, payer policy, physician practice, and healthcare strategy. They will bring strong leadership skills, executive presence, and the ability to translate complex healthcare trends into actionable opportunities that strengthen the specialty and improve patient access to care.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Lead Strategic Specialty Advancement Efforts

  • Develop and execute strategies that strengthen the position of interventional radiology within the healthcare landscape.
  • Identify opportunities to advance physician practice, patient access, reimbursement, and specialty growth.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO, physician leadership, and staff regarding healthcare trends, market forces, and emerging opportunities.
  • Support implementation of high-priority initiatives that promote the value and impact of interventional radiology.

Provide Portfolio Leadership

  • Oversee the Government Relations, Practice Development, and Health Policy/Economics functions of the organization.
  • Lead and develop a team of experienced professionals and subject matter experts.
  • Establish departmental priorities, goals, performance measures, and resource allocation.
  • Foster strong collaboration across teams and organizational departments.

Advance Advocacy and Health Policy Efforts

  • Guide organizational advocacy priorities and policy strategies.
  • Collaborate with physician leaders and volunteers to identify issues affecting the specialty.
  • Monitor and interpret legislative, regulatory, and healthcare policy developments.
  • Build relationships with policymakers, regulators, healthcare organizations, and coalition partners.

Drive Reimbursement and Payer Strategy

  • Provide strategic oversight for coding, coverage, payment, and reimbursement initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve coverage and recognition of IR services among public and private payers in all sites of service.
  • Evaluate emerging payment models and healthcare delivery trends.
  • Support initiatives that demonstrate the clinical and economic value of interventional radiology.

Support Physician Success and Practice Growth

  • Guide development of tools, resources, and programs that help physicians strengthen and grow their practices.
  • Identify opportunities to expand access to IR services and improve integration within healthcare systems.
  • Promote innovative approaches to physician engagement, practice development, and specialty advancement.

Represent the Specialty Nationally

  • Serve as a senior representative of SIR with external stakeholders, including: 
    • Federal agencies
    • Commercial payers
    • Specialty societies
    • Healthcare organizations
    • Industry partners
    • Health systems and physician groups

Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare policy, healthcare delivery, physician practice strategy, healthcare consulting, payer relations, advocacy, or association management.
  • Demonstrated success leading teams and managing complex portfolios.
  • Deep understanding of the U.S. healthcare delivery and payment systems.
  • Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with physician leaders, volunteers, and diverse stakeholder groups.

Preferred

  • Advanced degree in Health Policy, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Public Affairs, Business Administration, Law, or related field.
  • Experience working with physician specialty societies, healthcare associations, health systems, consulting firms, or health plans.
  • Familiarity with: 
    • CMS and commercial payer policy
    • Physician reimbursement models
    • Value-based care
    • Healthcare delivery transformation
    • Practice management and development
    • Regulatory and legislative processes

Location Requirements:  

The candidate must be local to the D.C. Metro area (within 25 miles of the SIR office) and must work in the office in Fairfax, VA as needed. Some travel is required primarily for Annual Meeting and other organization events. 


Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:  Small, fast-paced open office environment with moderate noise levels. Use of phones and computers for extended periods of time. Utilize office equipment and communication technologies for conference calls and teleconference meetings/webinars. Requires general mobility to move through the facility. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Frequent interaction with internal staff and physician members/board via phone, in person, email, and other mediums. Normal sitting and standing activities for an office environment.
