Job Summary:  Provides direct and indirect resident care activities under the direction of an RN or LPN/LVN.  Assists residents with activities or daily living, provides for personal care, comfort and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment for an assigned group or residents

Notifies licensed staff when a change in a resident’s mental or physical condition is observed.

Notifies appropriate licensed staff when resident complains of pain.

Demonstrates knowledge of restraint policies and procedures.

Keeps the unit clean and organized.

Cares for all residents with respect and dignity.

Able to have assigned residents at planned activities throughout the day.

Demonstrates knowledge of infection prevention and control policies and procedures, i.e., Standard Precautions, Transmission-Based Precautions, personal protective equipment, aseptic technique, hand hygiene.

Demonstrates knowledge of proper body mechanics.

Demonstrates knowledge of transfer of resident techniques, i.e., hoyer lift.

Demonstrates the ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.

Demonstrates the ability and willingness to help CNAs during the assigned shift.

Demonstrates strong observation skills.

Demonstrates strong communication skills.

Notifies appropriate licensed staff when resident complains of pain.

Notifies LPN/LVN or RN of complaints of pain.

CNA Direction:

  • Assists with CNAs' daily assignments
  • Provides staff when call-offs occur
  • Supervises CNAs during assigned shift
  • Assists with evaluating CNAs
  • Monitors feeding program
  • Monitors residents in restraints
  • Monitors residents who need to be turned in bed

Demonstrates competence in reporting victims of abuse according to established facility standards and state and local laws.

Documents appropriately in the medical record

Each medical record entry is legible, dated, timed and authenticated.

Demonstrates knowledge of and follows organization policies regarding the applicable National Patient Safety Goals.  (See NPSGs Competency Form)

Demonstrates competency in the knowledge of the delivery of resident care in an environment that optimizes resident safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Demonstrates the knowledge of proper identification and reporting of medical/health care errors.  Protects the resident in the event of a medical/health care error and, as appropriate, assists in medical/health care error resolution.

Demonstrates knowledge of the organization’s Emergency Operations Plan.
