The Utility Worker / Electrician Apprentice performs entry-level utility, maintenance, electrical support, instrumentation support, housekeeping, and general labor duties related to the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Facility, pumping stations, lift stations, stormwater systems, combined sewer overflow (CSO) facilities, and associated infrastructure and equipment.

 

The Utility Worker / Electrician Apprentice assists Electricians, Maintenance Technicians, Operators, and management personnel with preventative maintenance, repair activities, instrumentation support, facility upkeep, operational support, and emergency response activities while learning industrial electrical systems, instrumentation systems, wastewater equipment, and maintenance practices.

 

The Utility Worker / Electrician Apprentice may be required to assist with operations, maintenance, emergency response, stormwater operations, combined sewer overflow (CSO) activities, public works support activities, and other City or Project-related functions associated with the operation and maintenance agreement between the Company and the City of Fall River.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Assists Electricians, Maintenance Technicians, and Operators with preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities on electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, electromechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and process equipment associated with wastewater treatment and related facilities.
  • Assists with inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, modifying, and installing instrumentation systems, electrical systems, controls, communication systems, SCADA equipment, and related support systems.
  • Performs utility labor duties including housekeeping, cleanup, grounds maintenance, landscaping, grass cutting, trimming, painting, material handling, and facility upkeep activities.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, work areas, vehicles, and maintenance shops associated with wastewater treatment operations and maintenance activities.
  • Assists with reading and interpreting instrumentation diagrams, control logic sequences, blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, specifications, and vendor instructions.
  • Assists with maintaining pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, generators, conveyors, valves, chemical feed systems, HVAC systems, and related equipment.
  • Performs minor maintenance activities, preventive maintenance tasks, lubrication, inspections, and operational support activities as directed.
  • Maintains accurate maintenance records, work orders, inspection reports, and operational documentation as directed.
  • Assists operations and maintenance personnel during repairs, shutdowns, emergency response activities, and operational events.
  • Assists with pumping station checks and performs minor maintenance and housekeeping activities at remote facilities as directed.
  • Assists with septage receiving activities and operational support duties as directed.
  • Assists with stormwater, pumping station, CSO, and related municipal utility maintenance activities as assigned.
  • Supports emergency response operations including weather events, flooding, equipment failures, utility interruptions, public emergencies, and other operational incidents.
  • Assists City personnel and other departments when operational or maintenance support is required under the Project agreement.
  • Participates in snow and ice operations, emergency staffing, and other public works support activities when assigned.
  • May be required to perform work at remote facilities, pumping stations, CSO facilities, stormwater facilities, and other Project locations.
  • Ensures all work is performed in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, electrical codes, safety procedures, environmental standards, and Company policies.
  • Follows all confined space entry, lockout/tagout, arc flash, electrical safety, fall protection, chemical handling, hot work, and other safety procedures.
  • Responds to emergencies, equipment failures, spills, alarms, and weather-related events under the direction of higher-level personnel or management staff.
  • Participates in emergency response activities and may be required to respond during off-hours, weekends, holidays, or call-ins.
  • Operates facility vehicles, forklifts, hoists, and maintenance equipment in a safe manner and within training/certification requirements.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

 

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Trade school, vocational training, apprenticeship training, military technical training, or postsecondary coursework in electrical systems, instrumentation, industrial maintenance, electronics, mechanics, or related field preferred.

 

Experience

 

  • Prior experience in industrial maintenance, electrical work, instrumentation systems, construction, utility operations, wastewater operations, or related field preferred.
  • Entry-level candidates with mechanical and electrical aptitude and the ability to learn industrial maintenance and electrical systems will be considered.

 

Licenses & Certifications

 

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Electrical apprentice registration preferred or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • Massachusetts Hoisting License preferred.
  • Confined space entry training, lockout/tagout training, forklift certification, OSHA certifications, or related industrial maintenance certifications preferred.
  • Additional certifications related to electrical systems, instrumentation, industrial maintenance, safety, or wastewater operations are desirable.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

  • Basic knowledge of industrial electrical systems, instrumentation systems, tools, and maintenance practices preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of pumps, motors, generators, blowers, compressors, conveyors, valves, and related wastewater equipment preferred.
  • Ability to learn wastewater treatment equipment systems, industrial electrical systems, instrumentation systems, and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing devices, diagnostic equipment, and material handling equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, operational procedures, blueprints, schematics, control diagrams, vendor instructions, and technical manuals.
  • Basic mathematical, mechanical, analytical, and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and operational records.
  • Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to respond effectively during emergencies and changing operational conditions.
  • Ability to perform cross-functional duties in support of City and Project operations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, regulators, vendors, and the public.
  • Demonstrates a positive, professional, and cooperative attitude while performing assigned duties.
  • Requires wearing appropriate safety equipment and PPE.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, twist, and work in awkward positions for extended periods throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to climb ladders, catwalks, elevated platforms, tanks, and enter confined spaces in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier weights with assistance or lifting equipment.
  • Ability to work with hands extended above shoulders and below waist for extended durations while using hand and power tools.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve exposure to wastewater, chemicals, electrical hazards, noise, grease, dust, moving mechanical equipment, confined spaces, and elevated work areas.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors related to electrical wiring, instrumentation, and operational systems.
  • Must be available for overtime, emergency call-ins, weekends, holidays, and rotating on-call assignments as required.
