NJ Conservation Foundation Internship

Deer Stewardship

NJ Conservation Foundation has initiated a statewide effort to find balance for our forests, farms and families through more responsible deer stewardship in New Jersey.  This project aims to advance solutions in partnership with wildlife management agencies, local communities, hunters, animal welfare advocates, interested individuals and many others throughout New Jersey.

We are seeking an intern to assist primarily with 5 key aspects of this project:

  1. Identify potential partners in each of the stakeholder groups we have identified.
  2. Connect with potential partners to learn their perspectives and insights.
  3. Share draft “Action Guides,” which will provide guidance to a variety of stakeholder groups on how they can advance more effective deer stewardship.
  4. Receive and incorporate feedback into the Action Guides while continuing to build relationships with stakeholders.
  5. Support each stakeholder in their implementation of the Action Guides within their own spheres of influence.

Qualities that are important for success in this role include:

  • Background in ecology and wildlife biology
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Outgoing personality and ability to work with a broad spectrum of people with different backgrounds and political beliefs
  • Good listener who can synthesize new information
  • Very good writing skills
  • Success and enjoyment working in teams

The work for this position will require a minimum of 15 hours per week over 10 weeks, in a hybrid work environment with at least one day per week in our office based in Far Hills, NJ. The internship will include regular check-ins with supervisors and one or two standing team meetings during the week.  The internship requires access to a mobile phone and your own transportation for periodic meetings with stakeholders. Pay rate is $20 per hour.
