SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for technical and nursing aspects of canine reproductive practices. The technician is also responsible for maintaining the physical integrity of The Seeing Eye Chester Campus environment to ensure the risk of introduction of canine infectious disease is minimized, thereby protecting neonates in residence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists with whelping, using Whelpwise, ultrasound, Doppler, and chemical and physical assistance as needed to ensure the highest perinatal viability. 
  • Provides excellent nursing care to all adult breeders and puppies at the Breeding Station to ensure optimum health of all dogs. 
  • Performs barium esophagrams on German Shepherd pups, tube feeding of neonates, positions and restrains dogs for digital radiography, and assists staff veterinarians in surgery, C-sections, and resuscitates pups.    
  • Follows all protocols for kennel maintenance and canine husbandry aimed at the exclusion of infectious and non-infectious disease to ensure the well being of all dogs at TSE Chester Campus and to provide a clean healthy environment for the dogs to live in.  
  • Administers oral, topical, and injectable (IV, IM, SC) medications and treatments. Administers IV fluids utilizing IV fluid pumps as needed. Records all data to ensure accurate health records, which will provide the staff veterinarians with all information needed. 
  • Assists with adult and puppy socialization programs as needed to provide a physically and mentally healthy environment for dogs at TSE Chester Campus.  
  • Does data entry in SEIS III (PEs, re-checks, procedures, Lab reports from various laboratories such as Antech, Cornell, and others, scans images into image tab) 
  • Creates puppy vaccination cards from template, prepares go home medications with outside labels for puppies leaving the next day, updates Whelping calendar, takes puppy donor pictures. 
  • Collects, prepares, and interprets blood, urine, and stool samples, performs in house lab tests.  
  • Assists dogs with matings using natural or artificial insemination; and performs ultrasound examinations for the purpose of pregnancy determination.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates or Bachelor Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology or related areas or equivalent training and related experience as a veterinary technician assistant.
  • Licensed, certified or graduate veterinary technician preferred.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

  • Ability to lift and restrain dogs weighing 50+ lbs. 
  • Ability to work Sunday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  
  • Availability for emergency duties such as, weekends, evenings, overnights, and Holiday coverage.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities while providing consistent and professional service.
  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Possess good organizational skills including attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Maintain complete confidentiality, possess a professional demeanor, and always exercise discretion.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
