Title: Process Safety and Development Engineer

You'll be based in our Florence, South Carolina location, where you'll have the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment that fosters innovation and collaboration. You will support our Drug Substance Division at Thermo Fisher Scientific and play an important role in our company's success.

Discover Impactful Work:

An excellent early-career opportunity in Manufacturing Services for learning engineering process development in the API Pharmaceutical CDMO industry.  This role supports process safety at both Florence East & West sites, and will employ a variety of calorimetry instruments, automated reactors, and process analytical technology (PAT), interfacing closely with EHS, PRD, Engineering, and Operations.  Additional projects, involving reaction kinetics, distillation, stripping, extraction, crystallization, isolation, and drying operations, will range from troubleshooting, to optimization, to hazard risk mitigation, and will focus on bringing engineering perspective and expertise to ensure successful scale-up and robust operability in the plants.

A Day in the Life:

  • Conduct thermal hazard screening on starting materials, intermediates, products, and high-energy reagents using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

  • Conduct follow-on experimentation using accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) and ARSST.

  • Conduct reaction calorimetry studies (EasyMax & RC1) to characterize the enthalpies for the desired chemistry.

  • Identify potential scale-up issues tied to heat or mass-transfer limitations in the plant equipment.

  • Conduct crystallization, isolation, extraction, distillation, and drying studies, as needed.

  • Assist and/or lead in the generation of risk analysis (RA) and PHA documents

  • Issue and approve PHA documents in our electronic document management system (EDMS).

  • Collect reliable process data through designed laboratory experiments with accurate, detailed documentation for process evaluation, development and troubleshooting.

  • Record and analyze scientific data/observations in detail.

  • Summarize and interpret process data to draw logical conclusions.

  • Write technical updates/reports. Participate in technical discussions with internal teams and clients.

  • Use analytical instrumentation for mixture characterization including IR, HPLC, GC, and MS, as needed.

  • Provide timely technical support for scale-up production, quality and other inter-departmental needs.

Keys to Success:

Education

  • BS in Chemical Engineering, or related field required.

  • Advanced coursework/background in Physical and Organic Chemistry preferred.

Experience

  • At least 6 Months to 3 years of related experience in a regulated environment is required.

  • Co-Op experience will also be accepted.

  • Experience mentoring colleagues and providing technical training highly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Proven ability to lead complex investigations and implement effective solutions.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a matrix environment.

  • Proficiency with statistical analysis software and Microsoft Office suite.
