SUMMARY OF JOB:

The Unit Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and evaluating all nursing care on the unit.  The Unit Manager supervises assigned staff and has 24-hour responsibility/accountability for the functioning of the unit.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct and supervise all aspects of resident care given on the unit.
  • Conduct resident rounds daily, addressing issues and concerns as needed.
  • Perform and document a comprehensive assessment of each resident.
  • Oversee the development of an accurate comprehensive care plan based on each resident’s assessment, and review and revise as necessary.
  • Participate in resident care conferences.
  • Document resident care provided and resident’s response or lack of response to care provided.
  • Participate in report at the beginning and end of shift, and include sufficient information for follow-up action as needed.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance of professional nurses, nursing assistants and unit clerk.
  • Conduct disciplinary meetings with staff in accordance with Villa policy.
  • Report changes in resident’s conditions to supervisor, physician, and responsible party as necessary.
  • Follow established standards of nursing practice and implement facility policies and procedures, interpreting them to professional nurses, nursing assistants, restorative nursing assistants, residents, family members and physicians.
  • Identify resident problems, emergency situations, safety hazards and initiate appropriate action to resolve.
  • Prepare time schedules.
  • Administer and document medication and treatments per physician orders.
  • Order medications according to pharmacy protocol.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled floor meetings to improve communications and resolve problems.
  • Assume responsibility for compliance with federal, state and local regulations within the assigned unit.
  • Follow facility admission/discharge/transfer procedures.  
  • Assist wing nurse in communicating resident admission to other departments and physicians.
  • Listen to resident, family or physician concerns and initiate appropriate action.
  • Prepare nursing assistants’ assignments with wing nurse and explain pertinent resident care.
  • Document on residents’ progress notes as necessary.
  • Practice infection control according to facility procedures.
  • Participate in survey by authorized government agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Resident Care Coordinator or Director of Nursing, as needed.
  • Completes annual compliance and HIPAA training and exhibits behavior as set forth by the Code of Compliance in the performance of their duties. 
  • Adheres to the Organizations Policies and Procedures regarding the Compliance Program of the organization and is timely in reporting any possible concerns.
  • Follows all local, state and federal regulations as they pertain to their position.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Current license as an RN in the state of Pennsylvania

EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in geriatric setting
  • Some medical-surgical experience preferred
  • Knowledge of current nursing practices
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations in Long Term Care
  • Working knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid
  • Strong computer skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to seek out new methods and incorporate them into current nursing practice

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort
    1. Lift/carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Balance of sedentary/mobility work
    1. Frequent kneeling/stooping/crouching/reaching/bending
    2. Frequently moves/lifts supplies or equipment
    3. Frequently transfers and repositions residents
  • Ability to communicate verbally
  • Reading/seeing/writing requires far and near visual acuity, field vision, and color vision to read written communications
  • Must be able to write legibly
  • Eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity to perform the duties of a Unit Manager
