Summary/Objective:
The mammography technologist position performs a variety of technical activities associated with the performance of screening and diagnostic mammography procedures.
Required Education and Experience:
- Associate’s degree from an accredited school of Radiologic Technology
- Registered with American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography is required (R.T.(R)). *If you are not registered in Mammography (R.T. (R) (M)), you will be required to obtain certification in Mammography through the successful completion of mammography registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) within 1 (one) year of transitioning to this position or risk being terminated from this position.
- Current, valid AHA Healthcare Provider training (BCLS).
- Demonstrated ability to perform mammography procedures in accordance with the policies and protocols in effect (assessed within 90 days of hire).
- Familiarity with the technology related to practice in the assigned functional sections.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- At least one (1) year experience preferred.
Essential Functions:

- Performs a variety of task involving the operation of mammographic radiographic equipment and other equipment/devices as appropriate.
- Demonstrates competency in positioning of all mammography procedures (screening and diagnostic) as ordered by physician.
- Positions patients, using immobilization when necessary.
- Formulates appropriate techniques to demonstrate area of interest based on sound radiographic principles.
- Reviews all requests for appropriateness based on clinical information provided.
- Judges diagnostic quality of finished images prior to submission to radiologist for interpretation. Produces high quality images for the radiologist to evaluate.
- Performs quality control functions related to mammography.
- Prepare and set up medical supplies using aseptic techniques if appropriate.
- Provides follow-up mammography service in accordance with guidelines established by MQSA.
- Ensures operation of mammography equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Performs all required quality assurance testing to comply with MQSA and ACR requirements/regulations.
- Prepares all required reports and data pursuant to MQSA and ACR requirements.
- Maintains continuing education/competency in radiologic technology, specifically in mammography.
- Complete patient education regarding exam.
- Promote privacy and comfort for the patient.
- Follow infection control and safety guidelines.
- Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate action and initiates life support measures.
- Maintains professional relationships with members of medical staff, hospital staff, and patients.
- Maintains patient film and records as required by policies and procedures.
- Performs CT and X-Ray duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a healthcare setting. This role requires regular walking to various locations around the hospital. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes, or airborne particles and some mechanical equipment. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of patient conditions and elements. The noise level is moderate to quiet. Frequent exposures to destressed patients, families, and visitors. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

This position and requires standing, pushing, pulling, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Working in dim lighting environment is required.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full time position in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holidays and weekends are required. Working during inclement weather will be required. Shifts may vary, but working hours may be up to approximately 12 hours. This position also requires personnel to be “on call”. Return time to the facility is 30 minutes (certain positions may be exempt).
