Job Description:

Medical Laboratory Scientist

Performs clinical laboratory testing aiding the physician in the crucial role of detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.

EXPECTATION FOR ALL EMPLOYEES

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs clinical laboratory testing aiding the physician in the crucial role of detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs various laboratory procedures utilizing automated equipment, microscopes, manual procedures, and use of the computer terminal
  • Prepares reagents and specimens for processing
  • Performs all clinical laboratory tests (may include Microbiology and/or Blood Bank testing) ensuring that quality control is within limits prior to testing or troubleshooting before patient results are reported.
  • Follows up and documents actions relating to abnormal panic results
  • Prepares specimens for send-outs
  • Consults with other lab staff and healthcare personnel on test results, specimen requirements and testing protocols
  • Receives, and/or processes urine and other body fluid specimens
  • Performs non-clerical functions (putting away supplies, taking temperatures, cleaning, etc.)
  • Performs clerical functions as necessary and other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates the ability to use a personal computer and various software programs applicable to the position 
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate applicable office equipment and telephones
  • Exhibits the ability to deal effectively interdepartmentally & with the public
  • Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality, think and act independently with minimal supervision
  • Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location
  • Demonstrates a general knowledge of standard medical laboratory techniques, procedures, and safety precautions
  • Displays high level organizational skills including ability to multi-task and critically think
  • Must have legible handwriting

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES

  • Minimally must meet current qualifications listed under section “Clinical Laboratory Personnel Requirements” defined in the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Act of 1988 (CLIA-88) and Oregon Department of Human Services Regulations, College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission standards.  CAP reserves the right to set requirements that are more stringent than those of CLIA-88.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology  or Clinical Laboratory Science (Copy of academic degree or transcript will be required upon hire)

EXPERIENCE

  • Working knowledge of, but not limited to:  LIS and HIS computer systems, specialized automated analyzers, centrifuges, pipettors, microscopes and Pevco pneumatic system
