Job Description

Position Summary:

The Anesthesia Core Manager provides leadership, operational oversight, and strategic coordination for anesthesia services across multiple Veterinary Health System (VHS) facilities, including the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Johnson Family Equine Hospital, and other south campus clinical units. This position ensures efficient service delivery, high-quality patient care, and alignment with the educational and research missions of CSU by managing staffing, operational workflows, budgeting, and equipment resources for the anesthesia section. The role supervises anesthesia personnel, supports veterinary student instruction and clinical training, and collaborates with faculty and service leaders to advance anesthesia services and support the continued growth of the Veterinary Health System.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide operational leadership and strategic planning for anesthesia services across the Veterinary Health System (VHS). Direct service coordination across multiple clinical facilities, allocate personnel and resources, evaluate service demand and capacity, and ensure anesthesia services support patient care, teaching, and research operations.

  • Manage staffing structure, scheduling, hiring, and workforce planning for the anesthesia section. Determine staffing needs based on case volume and acuity, recruit and onboard employees, develop daily and long-term schedules, and ensure adequate coverage across all VHS facilities to maintain safe and efficient case flow.

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop anesthesia personnel to ensure high performance and professional growth. Conduct performance evaluations, establish individual development goals, provide coaching and corrective feedback, oversee training and cross-training, and promote a collaborative and supportive team environment.

  • Oversee financial and resource management for the anesthesia service. Manage section budgets, approve purchasing and procurement requests, ensure accurate charge capture and billing processes, and plan for equipment lifecycle needs including capital and non-capital replacements.

  • Coordinate anesthesia operations and communication across VHS clinical services, faculty, and hospital leadership. Facilitate section meetings, collaborate with service areas to coordinate procedures requiring anesthesia, and represent anesthesia operations in cross-service planning, workflow, and governance discussions.

  • Lead quality assurance, process improvement, and compliance initiatives for anesthesia services. Monitor operational workflows, review clinical incidents and outcomes, ensure adherence to safety protocols and regulatory requirements (including controlled substance compliance), and implement improvements that enhance patient care and operational efficiency.

  • Teach, mentor, and evaluate veterinary students, interns, residents, and trainees in anesthesia practices. Provide clinical instruction, evaluate student performance, guide anesthetic planning and drug protocols, and support the integration of classroom knowledge into clinical patient care.

  • Provide advanced anesthesia patient care and support specialized clinical procedures as needed. Deliver hands-on anesthesia management, respond to anesthetic emergencies, initiate appropriate therapeutic interventions, and ensure safe perioperative care when clinical demand requires.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the operational, clinical, and educational mission of the Veterinary Health System.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician through DORA and the State of Colorado.

  • Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety and welfare

  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Supervision:

This position will supervise the following classifications of employees: state classified, administrative professional, student and non-student hourlies. Their direct reports consist of technicians and DVMs within the anesthesia section.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in veterinary technology.

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

  • 5 years of primary veterinary anesthesia experience in a specialty referral hospital or academic setting.

  • Served as the sole anesthesia provider, independently managing all aspects of anesthetic care.

  • Anesthesia comprised approximately 75% of total job responsibilities over the past five years.

  • Provided instruction and mentorship to students, teaching foundational and advanced principles of anesthesia.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years of leadership/supervisory experience/work-leader experience

  • Specialty certification in Anesthesia & Analgesia (e.g., VTS-Anesthesia & Analgesia) and in good current standing.

Salary Range

$80,000 to $85,000
