POSITION SUMMARY:

Advanced Energy, RF Delivery Systems (RFDS) is seeking a DevOps Engineer III to support and continuously improve the development, build, test, release, and automation infrastructure used by embedded firmware teams developing software controls for RF Generator Systems in Plasma Power applications. Working closely with Embedded Firmware, Systems, Electrical, FPGA/Logic, Test, IT, and Product Development teams, this role focuses on firmware development operations, regression testing, database-backed workflows, CI/CD pipelines, build automation, release traceability, and AI/ML-enabled automation. The ideal candidate has strong software development practices, scripting, source control, build systems, automated testing, and data management experience, and can take ownership of defined tools, workflows, and automation improvements with sound technical judgment and increasing design independence. This role helps teams ship firmware faster with better quality, stronger traceability, and reduced manual effort.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own and support defined tools, processes, and automation infrastructure used across the embedded firmware development lifecycle.
  • Own, develop, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for firmware builds, unit/integration/regression tests, static analysis, documentation generation, and release artifacts.
  • Take ownership of build environments, dependency management, toolchain and compiler integration, artifact storage, and automated release workflows.
  • Design and maintain automation scripts and internal tools (Python, shell, or similar) to reduce repetitive engineering tasks.  Support automated regression test frameworks, including test execution, result capture, reporting, failure triage, and trend analysis.
  • Develop, maintain, and take ownership of database-backed tools used to manage test results, build metadata, release history, engineering metrics, configuration data, and traceability records.
  • Apply data analysis, machine learning, and AI-assisted tooling to identify recurring failures and trends and to improve workflow efficiency, troubleshooting, and engineering decision support.
  • Own dashboards, reports, and metrics for build health, regression status, release readiness, defect trends, and automation effectiveness, ensuring they remain useful and actionable for engineering decisions.
  • Support integration across engineering tools such as Git, Jira, Confluence, CI/CD systems, artifact repositories, test frameworks, and databases.
  • Participate in design and code reviews and process improvement; independently troubleshoot build, test, lab, database, automation, and integration issues within owned areas; and document DevOps workflows, schemas, and release procedures.
  • Develop task estimates, contribute to Agile project planning, and take ownership of assigned firmware automation, regression testing, and AI-assisted improvement tasks through completion.
  • Some travel within the US and some international sites is possible.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Location: Onsite in Fort Collins, CO
  • Environment: Production, and calibration laboratory setting with some office work

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience supporting embedded firmware teams, embedded C/C++ build systems, or hardware-adjacent software development environments.
  • Familiarity with embedded concepts such as RTOS-based systems, embedded processors, device drivers, peripherals, bootloaders, hardware abstraction layers, or board-support packages.
  • Experience with build tools (CMake, Ninja, GNU Make, GCC/G++) and automated test frameworks (pytest, Robot Framework, GoogleTest, CTest, or similar).
  • Experience developing automated regression frameworks, test harnesses, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), bench automation, instrument control, or lab-based test automation.
  • Experience developing dashboards or reporting workflows for build status, test results, defect trends, or engineering metrics.
  • Experience with artifact repositories, package management, containerization (Docker or similar), or reproducible/virtualized build environments.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity and secure development practices, including vulnerability management, software supply chain security, secure CI/CD pipelines, and security-focused validation of firmware and software releases.
  • Experience integrating AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot or GitHub Copilot into software engineering workflows and engineering automation solutions.
  • Familiarity with secure development practices, release traceability, software configuration management, reproducible builds, and audit-ready engineering documentation.
  • Experience in industrial, semiconductor, plasma/RF power, medical, aerospace, automotive, or other high-reliability product development environments.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with source control (Git) and collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Experience developing automation scripts or engineering tools using Python, Bash, PowerShell or similar languages.
  • Experience with CI/CD concepts and tools to automate software builds, test execution, packaging, deployment, release artifact generation, and quality-gated workflows.
  • Experience with automated build systems, dependency management, configuration practices, software versioning, and release management; embedded firmware build environments and cross-compilation toolchains strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of databases, including schema design, query development, validation, reporting, and integration into engineering workflows; SQL preferred.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot toolchain, build, test, database, automation, infrastructure, and integration issues across multiple engineering systems, drive issues to closure within owned areas, and escalate appropriately when scope or risk requires broader support.
  • Experience using data analysis to identify trends and recommend improvements to engineering workflows and test processes.
  • Familiarity with machine learning, AI-assisted development, or intelligent automation applied to test analysis, workflow automation, or engineering productivity.
  • Working knowledge of Linux and/or Windows development environments, including build, automation, and CI infrastructure; strong verbal and written communication skills; and the ability to work independently, own assigned deliverables, and collaborate effectively across engineering disciplines.

EDUCATION:
