Position Summary:

Turning Point Center for Youth & Family Development, Inc., a nonprofit organization serving individuals and families in an outpatient setting working on mental health and substance use. An internship at Turning Point is focused on introducing students into the community mental health environment with a variety of different programs and services. Interns are able to customize their internship experience to be able to gain exposure and experience in a variety of different settings and a variety of different populations. 


Role Qualifications:

  1. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in HDFS, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field
  2. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural humility, and a commitment to social equity
  3. Ability to pass background check and UA requirements
  4. Reliable transportation and availability for in-person work 
  5. Experience or coursework in criminal justice, family systems, or trauma-informed care, preferred


Position Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with intakes, group co-facilitation and case documentation under supervision
  2. Shadow and support clinicians in coaching, individual, group, and family therapy sessions
  3. Help coordinate services and maintain contact with clients, families, and external partners
  4. Attend staff meetings, case consultations, and professional development opportunities
  5. Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and agency guidelines
  6. Support outreach and engagement efforts for clients on Medicaid and underserved populations


Learning Opportunities:

  1. Exposure to trauma-informed care, evidence-based practices, and systems navigation
  2. Experience working with individuals and families with complex needs
  3. Insight into clinical documentation, Medicaid billing standards, and multidisciplinary collaboration

  1. Represent the agency, in word and action, in a manner that conveys professionalism, consensus of department and treatment team, support the agency mission and treatment philosophies, and regard for agency policies and procedures.(PPPM-Section 1080 3.d.)
  2. Role model to clients in an appropriate demeanor, appearance, language and communication. (PPPM-Section 1080 1.g.)
  3. Treat with respect the findings, views, and actions of all colleagues, and use appropriate channels to express judgment on these matters. (PPPM-Section 1080 3.c.)
  4. Work within the bounds of professional protocol, in all manner of speaking.(PPPM-Section 1080 3.e.)

Complete other duties as assigned.


Essential functions:

  1. Effectively represent the mission and purpose of Turning Point.
  2. Oversee all aspects of the client’s treatment services and delivery.
  3. Coordinate with Supervisor to ensure the quality of therapeutic services for the clients served in all areas of the program.

Supervisory responsibilities:  Direct supervision of assigned interns, when applicable.


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  1. Ability to do occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds (physical).
  2. Ability to use computerized client database systems for documentation and record keeping (visual).
  3. Ability to communicate with clients, families, referral agents and other professionals in person, by telephone and by email (verbal, visual, hearing).
  4. Ability to climb stairs to access clients at all times in the buildings (physical).
  5. Ability to operate a motor vehicle in order to transport clients (physical, visual).
