Position Summary: The Long Term Substitute Band Teacher at Ascent Classical Academy creates and delivers lessons within the framework set by our content-rich curriculum, in collaboration with colleagues and in partnership of a classical, content rich education. ACANC is dedicated to the intellectual and moral betterment of our students and encourages teachers to take their own moral and intellectual improvement seriously as part of a supportive and excellence-driven culture. The Long Term Substitute Band Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction and fostering a positive, structured learning environment. This role includes guiding students through content-rich band instruction, developing foundational skills in instrumental performance, music literacy, and ensemble participation, while nurturing discipline, attentiveness, and an appreciation for the musical tradition. Teachers provide students with a robust educational experience during each class period, ensuring both musical growth and personal development. In addition, teachers are expected to maintain clear expectations, demonstrate subject matter expertise in instrumental music, and thoughtfully support the individual development of each student while cultivating a spirit of collaboration and excellence within the ensemble.

Essential Functions:

  • Implement content-rich music lessons in alignment with curriculum guidelines and expectations
  • Deliver high-quality music instruction to grammar, middle, and high school students, fostering musical skill development, creativity, and appreciation for a variety of musical styles
  • Maintain a structured, orderly, and engaging classroom environment that supports student learning and character formation
  • Assist with daily operations of the school, such as supervision of end of day routines and procedures, lunch and recess times, and other transitional periods
  • Build positive relationships with students by encouraging participation, managing classroom behavior, and supporting individual growth in both musical ability and attentiveness
  • Adapt instruction as needed to meet the varying needs of students, including providing support or extension opportunities
  • Reinforce foundational music concepts such as rhythm, melody, and vocal or instrumental performance through consistent and thoughtful instruction
  • Assist with classroom organization and preparation, including setting up materials, distributing resources, and maintaining a tidy learning environment
  • Supervise students during assigned times, including arrival, dismissal, and transitions, as needed
  • Respectfully and effectively guide students using classical pedagogy and classroom management practices
  • Support the intellectual and moral development of students in keeping with the mission of Ascent Classical Academy and Hillsdale College's Barney Charter School Initiative
  • Collaborate with Students Services team to meet requirements of special educational plans, such as IEPs, 504s, and others
  • Maintain confidentiality in student records and communications
  • Maintain a collegial, professional relationship with students, parents, and colleagues as a partner in the community of learners
  • Effectively communicate with school leadership and team members regarding student progress, needs, and classroom updates
  • Demonstrate consistent and reliable attendance by adhering to assigned work hours and following proper procedures for absences or tardiness
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Commitment to the policies, mission, and vision of ACACS
  • Conviction in the values of a rigorous liberal arts education
  • Commitment to model moral character in line with the school's core virtues
  • Adherence to all ACACS policies, including but not limited to the Employee Handbook, Family Handbook, and applicable school and board policies
  • Proficiency in English verbal and written
  • Proficiency in a variety of teaching strategies and techniques to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to effectively articulate information and issues
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire students to achieve their personal best
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment with superior organization and computer skills
  • Ability to develop positive and professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and team members
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism
  • Creative problem-solving skills and adaptability to challenges
  • Patience, reliability, and a positive attitude
  • Demonstrate consistent and reliable attendance by adhering to assigned work hours, reporting on time, and following proper procedures for absences or tardiness to ensure minimal disruption to students, colleagues, and school operations
  • Willingness to perform other related duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to traverse the classroom and school and adjust one's tone and height by bending or leaning in order to teach each child
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer, or standing to teach
  • Must be able to supervise outdoor activities
