Position Summary:

The Paint Technician is responsible for preparing and applying paint and finish coatings to vessels, equipment, and facilities. Performs surface preparation, uses spray and hand tools, mixes materials, and follows all safety, EPA, and OSHA standards to deliver high-quality finishes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prep and apply primers and top coats as needed to areas of vessels as instructed
  • Prep for paint jobs by completing tasks including covering and protection, tent building, and cleaning and hard sanding surfaces
  • Learn the processes of varnish preparation and application of finish products, including on teak surfaces
  • Learn the process and paint application process and mixing instructions of all paint and primer products along with fairing compounds
  • Prepares wood, fiberglass, and metal surfaces for painting, and paints parts, equipment, interiors, and exteriors of ships, boats, and shipyard and marina buildings, using brushes, spray guns, and rollers
  • Mixes solvents according to formula, and immerses parts in solution or washes surfaces to remove grease, rust, scale, and dirt
  • Smooths wooden and plaster surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, and sanding machines
  • Washes and treats surfaces with oil, turpentine, and other preparations
  • Apply filler material into various surfaces to prepare for painting
  • Mixes and matches colors of paint, varnish, stain, and shellac
  • Operates spray painting equipment or brushes or rolls paint on surfaces
  • Sands surfaces between coats and polishes final coat to specified finish
  • Cutting stencils and brush or spray lettering and decorations on surfaces
  • Abides by EPA and OSHA standards regarding the proper protocol of the cleaning and disposing of waste products or material
  • Wear personal protective equipment – dust masks, eye protection, ear plugs, paint suits, paint hoods, and respirators, etc. 
  • Performs all work in accordance with established plans, specifications, schedules, and standards of quality and safety
  • Stocks and assists in maintaining inventory of shop supplies, materials, tools and equipment
  • Maintains clean, orderly and safe work areas; properly maintains assigned equipment and tools
  • Documents work performed daily
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor and staff, co-workers, guests, vendors, contractors, etc.
  • Following company, industry and best practices regarding safety standards (safe equipment usage, personal protective equipment, reporting)

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years experience as a finish painter preferred

  • Requires climbing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and twisting

  • Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 pounds
  • Exposure to changes in temperature and humidity
  • Work is performed outside in the elements, on and around water
