Description:

Works under minimal supervision using electroencephalograph to measure and record the brain’s electrical activity, performing EEG’s in the Laboratory and at the bedside of critically ill patients in the Intensive and critical care units. Performs auditory and visual evoked potential tests. Observes the patient and keeps a careful record of his/her behavior. Responsible for minor equipment repair. Able to work various shifts during hours of lab operation M- F 7a- 530p and On Call shifts during off hours , including weekends.

Position Purpose

Works under minimal supervision using electroencephalograph to measure and record the brain’s electrical activity, performing EEG’s in the Laboratory and at the bedside of critically ill patients in the Intensive and critical care units.  Performs auditory and visual evoked potential tests. Observes the patient and keeps a careful record of his/her behavior.  Responsible for minor equipment repair. Able to work various shifts during  hours of lab operation M- F 7a- 530p plus on call.

As an EEG Technologist, you will:

  • Writes a comprehensive patient history gathering appropriate information from patient, patient’s record and family members to include seizure types, date of last seizure, other neurological symptomatology and medications.

  • Explains test procedure to patient and family members present.  Modifies communication based on age, developmental level and background of patient.

  • Performs EEG record according to the standards of the laboratory (routine sleep, bedside and electro cerebral silence recordings)

  • Implements alternative methods or adjusts control to obtain optimal recording.  This may include appropriate control setting changes on the machine, use of extra electrodes, extra montages and use of activation procedures.

  • Recognizes artifact (patient or environmental).  Documents, eliminates or takes proper measures to monitor the artifact.

  • Takes appropriate actions during patient emergency situations and ensures patient safety at all times.  Demonstrates understanding of the unique needs of the patient population served.

  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with patients, patient families, lab staff, physicians and other members of the hospital staff.

  • Orients new employees to job procedures as assigned by supervisor.

  • Learns one modality of evoke potentials under supervision of Lab Supervisor.

  • After attending appropriate training programs, completes Neonatal and Operating Room long-term monitoring electrocephalograph in NICU and outpatient pediatric patients.

  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a 1 year program for EEG Technologists and/or Registered by the American Board of Registered EEG Technologists with one year of experience performing electroencephalograms.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • R EEG within 2 years of hire

  • ACLS Preferred
