At Smith+Nephew, we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living. We are seeking an AutoCAD Designer / Drafter to support engineering, maintenance, and capital projects within a regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.

This role plays a critical part in maintaining accurate, compliant technical documentation that supports safe, efficient, and compliant operations across production, utilities, and cleanroom facilities.

What You’ll Be Doing

As an AutoCAD Designer / Drafter, you will partner closely with Engineering, Maintenance, Facilities, and Project teams to create and maintain high-quality technical drawings that reflect current site conditions and support ongoing improvements.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing, revising, and maintaining AutoCAD drawings such as:
    • Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
    • Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
    • Equipment and facility layouts
    • Cleanroom layouts and classifications
    • Utility systems (purified water, clean steam, compressed air, HVAC, electrical, and instrumentation)
  • Updating as-built drawings following equipment installation, upgrades, or facility modifications
  • Managing drawing revisions, numbering, and changing histories within the site document management system (EDMS)
  • Ensuring drawings align with cGMP, FDA, safety, and internal engineering standards
  • Supporting validation activities, audits, and regulatory documentation in partnership with Quality Assurance
  • Collaborating with engineers, maintenance teams, and project managers on capital and small-scale projects
  • Conducting site walkdowns to verify existing conditions and dimensions
  • Reviewing vendor and contractor drawings and coordinating required updates
  • Supplying drawings for improvement projects, investigations, and safety enhancements

What You’ll Need to Be Successful

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience
  • 2–5+ years of AutoCAD experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or facilities environment
  • Strong ability to interpret and update mechanical, electrical, architectural, and piping drawings
  • Experience working with P&IDs, equipment specifications, and utility schematics
  • Working knowledge of building codes, piping standards, and industrial safety practices
  • Strong attention to detail with a disciplined approach to document control

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or other cGMP-regulated environments
  • Familiarity with cleanroom design principles and pharmaceutical utility systems
  • Exposure to 3D modeling tools such as AutoCAD 3D, Revit, or SolidWorks
  • Knowledge of ISO, ASME, FDA, or ICH standards related to facilities and equipment

Work Environment

This position supports pharmaceutical manufacturing operations and will include time spent in:

  • Cleanrooms and controlled manufacturing areas
  • Laboratories and mechanical rooms
  • Utility and production spaces

Field verification activities may require PPE and adherence to site safety procedures.
