SUMMARY:
The Shop Technician is to support gearbox, main shaft, drivetrain, or related rotating equipment repair, rebuild, inspection, and assembly.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support the Operations Department by performing value added work. Responsibilities include:
- Reports to the Production supervisor of the organization.
- Operate forklifts and cranes in a safe and efficient manner.
- Adherence to safety requirements, such as PPE, chemical safety (MSDS), crane, fork lift, and work station inspections.
- Adherence to internal systems related to Quality, ISO, and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) to ensure an efficient, competent, and effective operation.
- Comprehension of Imperial and Metric tolerances.
- Comprehension of internal drawings, bills of material, and procedural documentation.
- Disassembly, cleaning, and inspection of gear drives per Repair Procedure Document Guidelines (see FM 10XYZ for specific details).
- Perform visual inspection:
- Record abnormal wear;
- Measure and record respective bores and journals; and
- Arrange and identify components (gearing) that passed visual inspection to receive further processing such as nondestructive testing and grinding.
- Recycle unusable items such as bearings, damaged gearing, and auxiliary items.
- Assembly and inspection of gear drives per Repair Procedure Document Guidelines (see FM 10XYZ for specific details).
- Disassembly, cleaning, and inspection of main shafts per Main Shaft Repair Procedure Document Guidelines (see FM 10MSZ for specific details).
- Assembly and inspection of main shafts per Main Shaft Repair Procedure Document Guidelines (see FM 10MSZ for specific details).
- Adherence to production schedule and completion of tasks in a timely manner.
- Assisting with timing and continuous improvement exercises.
- Maintain and clean equipment, tools (shared and individual) and work stations.
- Adherence to 5S requirements.
- Attending scheduled meetings such as daily production and weekly safety, when requested.
- Up to 15% of work time travel may be required annually based on business needs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Mechanical background is required. Gearing related experience is a plus.
- Must have a positive attitude and good communication skills.
- Basic knowledge and experience using common hand tools and measurement tools.
- Ability to safely operate forklifts and cranes or willingness and ability to be trained and certified.
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma, or equivalent experience in wind turbine environment.
WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
This position works in a heavy industrial repair shop environment involving large gearbox components, rotating equipment, oils, cleaning chemicals, cranes, forklifts, and industrial tooling. The employee must be able to:
- Lift and move components weigh up to 75 pounds.
- Stand, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in physically demanding conditions for extended periods.
- Work in oily, greasy, noisy, and industrial shop conditions.
- Safely work around heavy equipment and suspended loads.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and precision instruments safely and effectively.
- Read and interpret technical documentation and inspection records.
