Tax Accountant Needed 

 

At Cummings Electrical, we are committed to operational excellence and financial integrity across all areas of our business. We are seeking a detail-oriented Tax Accountant to manage payroll tax and sales/use tax compliance across multiple states/jurisdictions. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate tax filings, timely payments, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while supporting audits, reporting requirements, and process improvements.

 

The Tax Accountant will work closely with Payroll, Human Resources, Accounting, and operational teams to maintain compliance, reduce risk, and support the continued growth of the organization.

Responsibilities

Payroll Tax Compliance

  • Prepare, review, and timely file payroll tax returns at the federal, state, and local levels
  • Ensure accurate withholding, reporting, and remittance of payroll taxes
  • Reconcile payroll tax accounts and resolve discrepancies
  • Monitor changes in payroll tax laws and regulations across multiple jurisdictions
  • Coordinate with Human Resources and Payroll teams to ensure accurate employee tax data

Sales & Use Tax

  • Prepare and file multi-jurisdiction sales and use tax returns
  • Maintain taxability matrices and ensure proper application of tax rates
  • Manage exemption certificates and resale documentation
  • Reconcile sales tax payable accounts and investigate variances
  • Research and respond to tax notices, inquiries, and assessments

Multi-Jurisdiction Compliance

  • Track and manage nexus obligations across states and local jurisdictions
  • Register and maintain tax accounts as business operations expand into new areas
  • Ensure compliance with varying filing requirements and reporting schedules

Audit & Reporting

  • Support payroll and sales tax audits by gathering documentation and responding to auditor requests
  • Maintain organized records of tax filings, payments, and correspondence

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Work within ERP and payroll systems to ensure accurate tax setup and automation
  • Identify opportunities to improve tax processes, efficiency, and compliance controls
  • Collaborate with Accounting, Payroll, HR, and operational teams to support business objectives

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 2–5+ years of experience in payroll tax and sales/use tax compliance
  • Experience managing multi-state and multi-jurisdiction tax filings
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems
  • Ability to meet strict filing deadlines and manage competing priorities
  • Strong analytical, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Effective communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
