About Walden School:

Walden School is a nationally-recognized residential therapeutic and education program for deaf children and youth ages 8 to 22 who have often experienced significant adverse childhood events as well as language deprivation.


SUPERVISOR: Day Child Care Worker Supervisor


POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for assisting teachers in the classroom, supporting students in the dorm on non-school days, supporting treatment goals, and providing supervision of students.


FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

EDUCATION

Assist the teacher with classwork and activities, including 1:1 support and small-group work as assigned by the teacher.


Meet weekly with teachers to coordinate classroom activities and expectations.


SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS

Supervise students’ daily routines and assist with daily living skills.


Support and assist students working on treatment goals.


Develops and maintains meaningful and supportive relationships with the students while maintaining appropriate adult/student boundaries.


Provide students with a level of supervision consistent with the treatment plan and the Walden School safety policies.


Some restraints may be required when working with young students or students with special needs, however, TLC embraces and celebrates a spirit of inclusion and diversity, and reasonable accommodations and modifications will be made whenever possible. The diversity of our student population may require that some assignments have a heavier physical responsibility due to safety.

 

May be delegated and trained to conduct medication administration or certain medical procedure responsibilities for students.

 

May be required to drive students or clients and additional driving responsibilities as needed.


Employees may be asked to occasionally travel, requiring they work outside of their regular hours.

 

Perform other tasks as assigned by the classroom teacher, Department Supervisor and/or Program Leader.


CASE MANAGEMENT

Convey all pertinent information concerning students to other staff via e-mail, logs, and incident reports.


Write logs daily for following students and incident reports as necessary.


Read and become familiar with the profiles and background information of each student in their unit.


Utilize crisis intervention strategies consistent with the Professional Assault Crisis Training program.


ADHERE TO WALDEN SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Attend training as assigned by the supervisor.


Maintain current certification in PART, OSHA, Pro-Act, and First Aid.


Consistently follow TLC/Walden School policies and procedures.


INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS

Supports daily living skills activities that are fun, informative, and educational, increasing independence.


Prepares living skills activities that are age- and skill-appropriate for students in the unit.

Requirements

  • A minimum of conversational fluency in American Sign Language is required, with native or near-native ASL fluency preferred
  • Previous classroom experience required.
  • At least one year of experience in a residential treatment program or a degree in Human Services is preferred
  • Previous experience with crisis prevention and the ability to prevent harmful behaviors are preferred
  • Must be able to remain calm, non-defensive, with a supportive attitude during a crisis or potential crisis 
  • ASL Classes may be required based on ASL fluency 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license in good standing
  • Transporting students in TLC vehicles

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be physically able to perform all duties of the job, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, reaching above shoulder level, climbing stairs, pulling, typing, prolonged standing or sitting, and restraining a dysregulated student when necessary.
