Overview

This individual is a clinically competent, certified advanced practitioner, who serves in the comprehensive care of the medical oncology and hematology patient throughout the continuum of care. Under the scope of an advanced practice clinician and approve privileges within Beebe Healthcare, the individual is expected to perform comprehensive patient assessments, follow-up care, diagnosis, side effect and infusion reaction management, survivorship care services, and patient education/counseling in collaboration with the medical oncology physicians. Follow(s) established advanced practice standards, procedures, and guidelines/protocols to give direction to patients, families, nursing and other staff when appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive assessments for new and established oncology and hematology patients.
  • Management of complex oncology and hematology patients to include side effect management, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, prioritization of duties, and time management skills based on patient assessment and interpretation of test results.
  • Serves as the primary clinical support for the infusion center when assigned. Duties include management of infusion reactions, patient care needs presented by nursing and pharmacy, coverage of triage issues and assessments, and critical lab and radiology results.
  • Formulate and implement survivorship care plans for all curable cancer patients.
  • Identify and initiate referrals to palliative care.
  • Collaborate with the palliative care team for management of patient's ongoing care.
  • Communicates positively and effectively with patients, families, physicians and the multidisciplinary oncology team.
  • Coordinates patient care with PCP and specialty providers when appropriate.
  • Provides detailed education and counseling to patients and families regarding diagnosis, goals of therapy, expectations, and treatment related side effects and management.
  • Develop a comprehensive plan of care in collaboration with the attending oncologist to include selection of appropriate pharmacologic agents, referrals, and end of life care.
  • Inpatient oncology and hematology acute care coverage to include rapid assessment and treatment of acutely ill oncology/hematology patients.
  • Collaborate with medical oncologist and inpatient disciplines to determine the most appropriate level of care.
  • Assist in the admission and discharge of patients receiving inpatient chemotherapy in collaboration with the attending oncology physician.
  • Administration of intrathecal chemotherapy in collaboration with interventional radiology.
  • Provide after-hours call coverage as part of a rotating schedule to include phone triage, clinical decision-making, and urgent inpatient/outpatient concerns in conjunction with on-call oncologist.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited Physician Associate or Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Previous experience in oncology as clinician or nursing required.
  • Licensure as an advanced practice clinician (PA or NP) in the state of Delaware or ability to obtain with offer letter.
  • DEA licensure or ability to obtain prior to credentialing.
  • Current BLS certification per American Heart Associate guidelines.
