General Position Summary

Plan and direct the work activities of a Purchasing Assistant, Buyers Assistant Manager.  Manage activities in assigned work groups to ensure that requisitioned materials are sourced with suppliers that meet our performance standards at a competitive price.  Ensure that company cost reduction targets are reached for purchased materials, goods and services.  Take prudent actions to ensure that company is protected from any type of supply chain risk.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and administer strategies to achieve performance objectives relating to quality, cost, and materials availability
  • Negotiate price and supply terms for selected major commodities; issue purchase orders to approved suppliers; and follow-up to ensure timely deliveries
  • Evaluate the current supply base for major commodities and develop new or existing suppliers to support future requirements
  • Assist in the resolution of supply problems and supervise the follow-up and expediting of supplier deliveries
  • Develop and monitor timetables to ensure the availability of approved materials for new program launches. 
  • Develop and implement methods for improving supplier performance and staff efficiency
  • Review and recommend supplier capacity/quality capabilities with respect to new/or current sources
  • Mediate price/quality disputes within certain guidelines
  • Approve purchase orders
  • Recommend the addition or removal of suppliers from approved supplier list
  • Take prudent actions to ensure that the company is protected from any type of supply chain risk.
  • Produce written reports summarizing departmental performance for executive management and parent company review and decision making.

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and an established ERP system
  • Excellent planning, organizational, oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated understanding the key elements of supply chain management

 Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Business or Engineering discipline or equivalent work experience

 Work Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Purchasing, Manufacturing or Engineering Leadership role
  • Familiar with purchasing systems and organizational interfaces

 Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Demonstrated supervisory skills, with a strong emphasis on continuous improvement

 Certificates/Licenses

  • Preferred SPSM certification from The Institute of Supply Chain Management
