Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, performs direct patient care and delivers therapeutic interventions in a proficient, age specific manner. Duties and responsibilities are performed according to standards outlined in the competency based evaluation tool. This position is responsible for specific scrub duties in conjunction with policies, procedures and objectives of the Cardiac Operating Room (O.R.).

Essential Functions & Responsibilities: 

o    Collaborates with the care team in the formation of the patient’s plan of care to achieve desired outcomes for the patient based on physician preference cards, current assessment findings, diagnostic reports, and standards of care/practice.

o    Communicates safe therapeutic care for patient throughout the patient’s perioperative experience.

o    Maintains and cares for equipment and supplies. Prepares OR rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment. Follows aseptic technique in opening sterile supplies and during set up for procedures.

o    Drapes patients and assists the surgical team during operative procedures.

o    Assists in turnover of room between cases.

o    Provides input for changes to physician preference cards according to surgeon's request.

o    Maintains a safe and orderly environment.

o    Participates in hospital wide infection control plan and quality improvement process.

o    Demonstrates effective communication, customer service, and team building skills.

o    Accepts responsibility for professional growth and development.

o    Coordinates all training, orientation, and precepting of new Surgical Technologists.

o    Develops and maintains a comprehensive orientation program for Surgical Technologists.

o    Coordinates and develops staff in-services and training on new procedures and equipment for all the various surgical procedures.

o    Works as a liaison between the operating room and central sterile supply.

o    Functions as the Operating Room Technician for complex cardiac procedures.

o    Operates and uses a wide range of highly specialized equipment and disposable supplies used for various procedures.

o    Anticipates the surgeon’s need of instruments or supplies during an operative procedure.

o    Anticipates and prepares for emergencies or untoward developments during a surgical procedure.

o    Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technologist program required.
  • Registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist required.
  • AHA BLS Provider CPR required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of Surgical Technologist experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of Cardiac Surgical Technologist experience required.
  • Must have a vast knowledge of cardiac surgical procedures and equipment.

Physical Requirements: Constant (67-100% of workday) walking, standing, use of arms and hands; frequent (34-66% of workday) bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting; ability to lift 35 lbs.; ability to push and pull 20 lbs.; auditory and visual skills to include color determination; ability to work in confined spaces; ability to reach above/overhead.

Mental Requirements: Possesses critical thinking and analytical skills.  Ability to multi-task.  Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team.  Capacity to cope with difficult situations. Ability to tolerate irregular hours including evenings, nights, and weekends. 

Environmental Requirements and Exposure Hazards: Potential risk of exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals.  Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens; must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
