Fleet Mechanic
About the Role
We are seeking an expert heavy equipment mechanic to inspect, diagnose, rebuild, maintain, and repair a mixed fleet of construction equipment, farm equipment, specialty utility vehicles, and support vehicles. This is a senior, hands-on role requiring advanced experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical and electronic controls, powertrain systems, chassis repair, and metal fabrication.
The ideal candidate can independently troubleshoot complex equipment problems, determine the root cause, and complete major repairs or component rebuilds safely and correctly. Extensive experience repairing construction and farm equipment is required. Experience working on Altec vehicles and equipment is a strong plus.
Responsibilities
- Perform advanced diagnostics, maintenance, rebuilding, and repair on construction equipment, farm equipment, specialty utility vehicles, trucks, trailers, and attachments.
- Rebuild and overhaul diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, axles, drivetrains, and related major components.
- Diagnose and repair chassis, steering, suspension, braking, cooling, fuel, exhaust, and powertrain systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, hoses, hydrostatic drives, and power take-off systems.
- Troubleshoot complex electrical, electronic, and control-system issues involving wiring, sensors, solenoids, relays, control modules, and communication networks.
- Perform welding, cutting, metal fabrication, and component or chassis repairs in accordance with manufacturer and safety requirements.
- Service equipment such as excavators, skid steers, trenchers, tractors, aerial lifts, bucket trucks, digger derricks, and similar machinery.
- Use diagnostic software, scan tools, multimeters, pressure gauges, and other test equipment to identify root causes and verify repairs.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and complete shop or field repairs as needed.
- Perform preventive maintenance and detailed inspections to identify developing problems before equipment fails.
- Identify safety concerns and remove unsafe equipment from service until repairs are completed.
- Read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, diagnostic procedures, and manufacturer specifications.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance, repairs, parts used, and outstanding issues.
- Coordinate with operators, supervisors, parts suppliers, and outside service providers when necessary.
- Keep tools, parts, and the work area organized and follow all applicable safety procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Expert-level professional experience repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining construction and farm equipment.
- Proven experience rebuilding diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, drivetrains, and other major mechanical components.
- Advanced knowledge of diesel, hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, electronic, and control systems.
- Strong welding and metal fabrication skills.
- Ability to independently diagnose difficult or intermittent problems, identify root causes, and complete major repairs efficiently and safely.
- Ability to read and work from electrical diagrams, hydraulic schematics, service manuals, and manufacturer specifications.
- Proficiency with mechanic tools, diagnostic software, scan tools, electrical test equipment, and hydraulic test equipment.
- Experience with preventive maintenance programs and thorough equipment inspection procedures.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to lift heavy parts, bend, climb, and work indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Dependable, safety-conscious, and able to manage multiple repair priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience servicing Altec vehicles and equipment.
- Experience with bucket trucks, aerial devices, digger derricks, or other utility fleet equipment.
- Experience maintaining utility, telecommunications, construction, or agricultural fleets.
- CDL, ASE certifications, DOT inspection certification, welding certification, or relevant manufacturer training.
