Primary Purpose

To serve as a facilitator for student groups using protocols learned through the AVID program.

 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)

The program includes an elective course designed to provide academic, social and emotional support to students as they take advanced coursework, such as Advanced Placement (AP) and Pre-AP courses.  It teaches strategies for success in the classroom, such as study skills and note-taking, as well as provides assistance with post-secondary planning and admissions for students who may be the first in their family to go to college.

Education/Certification:

High school diploma

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instruction:

Become familiar with the 10-Step AVID Tutorial process.

Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students.

Tutor students in small study groups or individually, assisting them in all subject areas based on the class and text notes they have collected in their AVID binders.

Determine from student notes and discussions the concepts that need to be taught or retaught

Facilitate student learning in a challenging, yet supportive, tutoring environment..

Evaluate student binder, including calendars and notes. 

 

Student Growth and Development:

Establish and maintain rapport with students.

Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.

Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for all AVID students to follow.

 

Communication:

Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their teachers.

Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and community members.

Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.  

 

Professional Growth and Development:

Participate in the Tutorology strand of the AVID program

Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.

Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.  

 

Policy:

Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
