Job Title: Machinist

Department: Fruita Machine Shop

Reports To: Fruita Plant Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for setting up and operating single- or multiple-spindle lathe-type screw machines equipped with automatic indexing to produce high-quality machined parts. The role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Set up and operate single- or multiple-spindle lathe-type machines equipped with automatic indexing.
  2. Manage feeding mechanisms to efficiently machine metal bar stock according to specifications.
  3. Interpret blueprints and job orders for product specifications, including dimensions, tolerances, part quantities, and tooling instructions.
  4. Position and secure collets, bushings, and stock pushers onto stock-feeding mechanisms using appropriate tools.
  5. Load bar stock into feeding mechanisms manually or using hoists.
  6. Install and adjust cams, gears, stops, and tool holders to control stock and tool movements at each station.
  7. Verify tool positions with measuring instruments and set cutting speeds and feed rates for optimal performance.
  8. Operate machine controls to cycle through settings, making necessary adjustments to ensure precision machining factors like timing, clearance, and chip removal.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Start and observe machine operation, inspecting first-run and sample work pieces with precision measuring instruments (e.g., plug and ring gauges, calipers, micrometers).
  2. Replace worn tools and perform basic sharpening using bench grinders.
  3. Operate machinery to machine nonmetallic materials as required.
  4. Develop expertise in specific machines, materials, or products based on job requirements.
  5. Set up machines for other workers as needed, providing guidance on processes.
  6. Follow current safety policies and procedures, maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  7. Adapt to evolving job duties as directed by management, in alignment with business needs.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High School degree or GED preferred
  2. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions.
  3. Requires good hand/eye coordination
  4. Must have basic math skills

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working conditions are a warehouse with a cement floor. Employees are regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level in the work environment is usually loud. It is an oily environment. Indoor temperatures could reach as high as 100 degrees or more in summer and fall months.
