Senior Systems Administrator

Location: Fuquay-Varina, NC (Onsite with 1 day remote)
Compensation: Based on experience, skills, and role fit

Role Summary

FHI is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator to lead and support our core infrastructure and cloud environment. This role is responsible for ensuring systems are secure, reliable, and scalable, while driving strong customer support and proactive problem resolution. You’ll play a key role in disaster recovery (DR) planning, infrastructure modernization, and mentoring others.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and support day-to-day operations of FHI’s infrastructure (servers, networks, systems, and tools).
  • Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade hardware, software, and core platforms.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for system issues, outages, and performance bottlenecks; drive root-cause resolution.
  • Build, test, and maintain Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies and infrastructure backup plans.
  • Administer identity and access management, ensuring secure access controls (including Okta and Entra ID/Azure AD).
  • Manage user and workstation accounts across systems including Active Directory, Microsoft 365, and related platforms.
  • Support and maintain virtualization platforms (VMware ESXi/vSphere).
  • Implement, monitor, and maintain Microsoft Azure solutions and cloud services.
  • Support infrastructure backups and recovery solutions (e.g., Veeam, Azure Backup).
  • Coordinate with vendors and third parties to resolve issues and implement solutions.
  • Maintain clear and current infrastructure documentation and standards.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new technologies to improve stability, security, and performance.
  • Train or mentor staff on new technologies, tools, and processes when needed.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong hands-on experience administering Windows-based infrastructure and enterprise environments.
  • Proficiency with Active Directory, Microsoft 365, and identity tools (Okta, Entra ID/Azure AD).
  • Experience with Azure administration and cloud infrastructure services.
  • Experience administering virtual environments, including VMware (ESXi/vCenter), Hyper-V, and Azure Virtual Machines.
  • Strong troubleshooting capability across servers, networks, and system performance issues.
  • Knowledge of IT security concepts and best practices (access controls, backups, firewalls).
  • Working knowledge of networking concepts, Azure, and Meraki, including industry best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with backup solutions (Veeam preferred) and DR planning/testing.
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting/automation.
  • Familiarity with SAN storage systems.
  • Understanding of MS SQL best practices and techniques.

Preferred Education & Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in computer science

Microsoft certifications preferred:

  • Azure Administrator Associate
  • Azure Solutions Architect Expert
  • MCSA / MCSE (or equivalent)
  • CompTIA certifications are a plus (A+, Network+)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for long periods and work at a computer for most of the day.
  • Ability to lift/move equipment and boxes as needed for hardware setup and support (bend, lift, twist, pull, push).
