Safety Specialist – EHS Coordinator

Gabbs, Nevada 

Overview

Responsible for ensuring compliance with MSHA standards in the workplace. Play a crucial role in promoting a safe working environment by advising on safety measures, conducting risk assessments, and enforcing preventative measures. Their primary goal is to establish a safe workplace according to legal standards and foster a culture of attention to health and safety.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Provides field HSE support and guidance throughout all activities. Fosters a safe culture by being informed, mindful, learning, fair and respectful
  • Ensure compliance with State and Federal MSHA regulatory and contract HSE requirements
    • Enforces company policies and procedures
  • Assists in the development and delivery of safe Operational Processes
  • Performance Measurement
    • Identifies potential and actual areas of improvement and assists in setting and formulating goals and tools for their achievement
    • Provides input to leading and lagging HSE performance measures
  • Assists teams in identifying hazards, assessing risks, and identifying relevant controls to manage and reduce these risks. Conduct and follow up on workplace assessments.  Manage PPE program. 
  • Perform audits to measure the level of safety culture and inspections per audit plan
  • Incident Management
    • Ensures Incidents are recorded & reported with proper case management
    • Prepares initial detailed incident reports and conducts immediate Incident & Near Miss investigation
  • Training & Coaching
    • Ensures that the company safety expectations are communicated to the workforce
    • Provides training sessions as per Training Plan & Competency development requirements
    • Educates workforce on Lessons Learned from previous and industry incidents
  • Contingency Management
    • Provide immediate response in emergency situations
    • Create and maintain effective emergency response and contingency drills to maintain and increase staff competency
  • Measure required environmental parameters
  • Monitor the quality of data entered in the reporting & action tracking tools
  • Contractor/Vendor Management
    • Maintaining records - track expiration dates and notifying vendors if expiring – Insurance, Site Specific, MSHA 5000-23 for all contractor/vendors
    • Record keeping Certificate of Liability Insurance
    • Record keeping Site Specific 5000-23 paperwork
    • Record keeping Contractors MSHA 5000-23’s
    • Conduct Safety Site Specific training with all visitors and contractors
    • Preparation of Safety MSHA Site-Specific packets for contractors/vendors
  • Document control
    • New Miner training paperwork record keeping
    • AIS sheets
    • Track cards
    • Vehicle inspections
    • Monthly fire extinguisher inspections
    • Annual hearing and pulmonary testing

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Must be highly organized and capable of handling multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong follow-up skills and attention to detail are essential with problem resolution skills
  • Must be self-driven with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated safety performance
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite; Adobe, eMaintenance (preferred) 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Nevada Driver’s License
  • Visual acuity, clear speech & hearing ability, cognitive ability, hand/eye coordination
  • Walking, climbing stairs and occasional ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, twisting, balancing, repetitive motion, driving, and squatting to perform the essential functions of this position; along with sitting for extended periods of time
  • Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment as required
  • Must have good hand/eye coordination and vision to safely fulfill all in-plant job requirements
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions and in industrial environment around hot, noisy process equipment with exposure to dust, sand, gravel, diesel exhaust, etc.
  • Will require occasional travel.  Occasional hours on the off-shift may be required.
  • Pass required background check, physical examination and drug screens

 

 

 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Minimum 2 years prior HSE experience in a mine setting – MSHA regulated
  • HAZCOM development
  • Demonstrates safety leadership
  • Blue Card Certified (preferred)
  • Motivated self-starter – conduct tasks with little or no supervision
  • Able to work independently and as a team
