Position Purpose

The Assistant Deli Manager supports the Deli Manager in leading all aspects of deli operations, including food production, merchandising, inventory management, customer service, food safety, and associate development. This position helps ensure the department operates efficiently, meets financial goals, maintains regulatory compliance, and delivers a high-quality shopping experience for customers.

Key Responsibilities Department Operations
  • Assist in managing daily deli department operations to ensure efficiency and productivity.
  • Oversee the preparation, packaging, display, and replenishment of deli products.
  • Ensure all products meet company quality, freshness, and presentation standards.
  • Support execution of merchandising programs, promotions, seasonal displays, and sales initiatives.
  • Assist with inventory ordering, receiving, product rotation, and shrink control.
  • Monitor equipment performance and coordinate maintenance needs when necessary.
Customer Service
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and ensure a positive customer experience.
  • Respond to customer questions, product inquiries, catering requests, and special orders.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and promptly.
  • Promote a customer-first culture among department associates.
  • Maintain service standards that encourage repeat business and customer loyalty.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, training, and developing deli associates.
  • Provide daily direction, coaching, and support to department team members.
  • Help schedule labor effectively to meet operational requirements.
  • Monitor associate productivity and adherence to department standards.
  • Foster teamwork, accountability, and a positive working environment.
  • Assume management responsibilities in the absence of the Deli Manager.
Food Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor proper food preparation, storage, labeling, temperature controls, and product rotation procedures.
  • Conduct routine inspections to ensure department cleanliness and food safety compliance.
  • Maintain compliance with company policies and operational guidelines.
  • Promote workplace safety and safe equipment operation.
Financial Performance
  • Assist in achieving departmental sales, labor, and shrink goals.
  • Monitor inventory levels and support effective ordering practices.
  • Help control expenses through proper production planning and inventory management.
  • Support labor productivity initiatives and operational efficiencies.
  • Review performance metrics and assist with implementing improvement plans.
