Purpose & Description

The Material Handler I (MH1) is responsible for the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption, and disposal. As a process, material handling incorporates a wide range of manual, semi-automated and automated equipment that support the logistics and make the supply chain work.  The Material Handler reports to the Purchasing Manager.

Skills & knowledge

  • Excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the inventory shipping and receiving processes and how to properly load and unload heavy materials with or without heavy equipment.
  • Excellent organizational, time management skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent motor vehicle skills, including hauling and pulling materials and/or trailers.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team.
  • General construction site safety rules and knowledge of how to safely operate heavy equipment around others.
  • Must speak, write, read, understand, and communicate clearly in English.
  • Must be able to use and read a tape measure.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Tasks & Activities

  • Receives, distributes, and stores products as directed in designated, secure locations.
  • Prepares and maintains records of materials received and shipped including dates of transactions, locations, and other pertinent information.
  • Inspects shipments for quality and accuracy; reviews accompanying documents for accuracy.
  • Confirms shipping details or special instructions.
  • Expedites shipments that affect the manufacturing process schedule.
  • Transports and loads or unloads materials, supplies, and finished goods (manually and/or using hand trucks, skids, forklifts, lulls, or any other required equipment.)
  • Precheck truck and trailer to ensure proper operation, and materials are secure.
  • Validates, approves, and accurately enter receipt of material and any receiving tickets into company software.
  • Collects and properly disposes of scrap bracing, cardboard, and strapping; maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Maintain and clean service truck, Lull, and forklift. Report mechanical or other maintenance issues to your supervisor and/or fleet services.
  • Maintaining the tool room and log any tools, PPE, etc. given out with employee name and department they work.
  • Assist in weekly and monthly inventory counts and/or audits.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to reprioritize workflow when it has been interrupted or redirected.
  • Must be able to problem solve in your area of expertise by defining the problem, determining the cause, selecting alternatives, and implementing the solution.
  • Must maintain a calm and considerate attitude always.
  • Never use impolite or offensive language. Use modest language and/or gestures & require the same of your team.
  • Must be able to determine when something does not look right, stop to assess the situation, and respond.
  • Must contact Fleet department and PM if repairs or alterations are needed to the heavy equipment, company vehicles or trailers, etc. Never make repairs or alterations unless written approval has been given from the Fleet Manager.

Requirements & work setting

  • May require prolonged periods of driving a truck, lull, forklift, or other equipment. 
  • Understand and use the procedures the company uses to account for inventory including counting methods.
  • Requires standing, sitting, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, leaning, squatting, lifting, driving, and repetitive motions to perform duties.
  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs. at any time.
  • May be asked to travel to a vendor, customer or other locations as needed. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.  Must be able to obtain a DOT Physical and have a clean motor vehicle report.
  • Work in a shop and yard with changing weather environments.
  • Day trips driving truck and/or pulling trailer with or without materials out of town or out of state is required.
  • Required usage of hammer, hatchet, saw, screwdriver, pliers, wrench, cutter, or other hand and power tools.
  • Follow organizational safety rules and guidelines in operating equipment.
  • Utilize required safety equipment when appropriate.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of inventory related experience.
  • One year experience in driving forklift and/or lull.
  • Must have at least 1 year experience in hooking and unhooking a 20-30 ft trailer as well as hauling and maneuvering both.
  • Prefer experience in Microsoft Office and any Inventory Control software programs.
