JOB DESCRIPTION
The Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO) will collaborate with the Transfusion Services Manager, Transfusion Medicine leadership and UTMB Hospital Quality to ensure that patient blood management and transfusion-related activities are monitored and conducted in the safest possible manner to meet or exceed all existing standards of practice at all four of the UTMB campuses.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
•    Bachelor's degree in nursing, Clinical Laboratory Science, Basic Science or related field
•    Must have two (2) years related experience

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS
Required:
•    Valid Texas RN License and/or Certification with American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technology (AMT) within 12 months of hire


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
•    Works with multiple leadership departments to support all four UTMB campuses to ensure the best transfusion practices
•    Collects all Transfusion Metrics for both within and outside of the laboratory
•    Collaborates with the Transfusion Services Manager and Transfusion Committee Chair in the development of the Transfusion Committee agenda 
•    Prepares and presents Transfusion Statistics at the monthly Transfusion Committee meeting
•    Prepares and presents Quality Metrics for all four UTMB Laboratory Services and Hospital Quality Meetings
•    Participates as a member of the Blood Stewardship Committee
•    Collaborates with nursing education to provide presentation during Nursing Services Orientation
•    Acts as the Transfusion Services representative at the Nursing Skills Fair
•    Conducts investigation into all transfusion-related events
•    Provides oversite of external error and incident reports related to Transfusion
•    Serves as a liaison between Transfusion Services personnel, Transfusion Medicine leadership and hospital nursing staff
•    Authors articles on process improvement for Risk Management and Nursing Services newsletters
•    Oversees monthly Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) reviews including preparation of timeline, summary of MTP activation and scheduling of meeting with all parties involved
•    Participates in Trauma Services Committee monthly meetings
•    Coordinates and directs process improvement projects and audits
•    Reports to the Safety Culture Committee (SCC)
•    Collaborates with Transfusion Services Manager and Transfusion Medicine Medical Director to develop Patient Blood Management Program according AABB requirements
•    Compiles Transfusion Medicine statistics to evaluate compliance with the Patient Blood management Program.
•    Works with the Transfusion Services Manager, Transfusion Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer to ensure compliance with all transfusion regulatory agencies  e.g. FDA, CMS, AABB, CAP and Joint Commission.
