Position Summary

The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in directing all aspects of Meat Department operations, including production, merchandising, inventory management, customer service, food safety compliance, associate development, and financial performance. This position helps ensure the department consistently provides high-quality products, maintains operational excellence, achieves sales and profitability goals, and delivers an exceptional customer experience.

Key Responsibilities Department Operations
  • Assist in overseeing daily Meat Department operations.
  • Ensure meat and seafood products are properly cut, packaged, labeled, stocked, and merchandised.
  • Maintain department standards for product quality, freshness, availability, and presentation.
  • Assist with ordering, receiving, inventory control, and production planning activities.
  • Support implementation of department promotions, seasonal programs, and merchandising initiatives.
  • Help ensure department readiness and operational effectiveness throughout all business hours.
Customer Service
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and promote a customer-first culture.
  • Assist customers with product selection, cooking recommendations, special orders, and custom requests.
  • Provide product knowledge and preparation suggestions to enhance the customer experience.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and in a timely manner.
  • Support efforts to drive customer satisfaction, loyalty, and sales growth.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Assist with training, coaching, and developing Meat Department associates.
  • Provide daily direction, support, and leadership to department team members.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Reinforce company policies, procedures, and performance expectations.
  • Assume department leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Meat Manager.
Merchandising & Inventory Management
  • Ensure service cases, displays, and sales floors are fully stocked and visually appealing.
  • Monitor inventory levels and identify replenishment opportunities.
  • Assist in reducing shrink through proper ordering, handling, storage, and rotation practices.
  • Ensure pricing, labels, and promotional signage are accurate and properly displayed.
  • Support inventory counts, audits, and department reporting requirements.
Food Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor product temperatures, dating, labeling, storage, and handling procedures.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
  • Promote safe operation and maintenance of department equipment and tools.
  • Support department readiness for inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.
Financial Performance
  • Assist in achieving department sales, margin, labor, and shrink objectives.
  • Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support efficient labor utilization and productivity initiatives.
  • Assist with inventory management practices that contribute to profitability.
  • Contribute to overall department success through consistent execution and accountability.
Qualifications
  • Previous meat department, grocery, food service, retail, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of meat cutting, merchandising, inventory management, and food safety standards preferred.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, coach, and develop associates.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management abilities.
  • Basic computer and operational knowledge.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • Ability to safely operate meat department equipment and tools.
  • Ability to lift and move products consistent with department requirements.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated environments for extended periods.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
